'Type Is Art' is both

New_picture_3

It's no big secret that Buffalo is home to some of the more sophisticated designers and professional graphic artists around. But they're certainly not household names. Many of them toil away in relative anonymity, producing engaging designs for advertising, obscure art projects or their own personal satisfaction. But every once in a while, some of that work reaches out and begs to be explored by the community at large.

Enter local designer Jose Rodriguez, who, in collaboration with artist and designer Susanne Cerha, has created an interactive website that explores the strong relationship between type and art. Users can learn about different parts of typography (not nearly as boring as it sounds, honestly) and create their own pieces of art by scaling and rotating parts of the alphabet.

Check out the site, the launch of which will be celebrated at SP@CE 224 (224 Allen St.) with a reception and exhibition from 7 to 10 p.m. Friday, July 11.
