McCree an interesting visitor

Free safety Marlon McCree, just cut by San Diego this week, is an interesting visitor to One Bills Drive. He was traveling to Buffalo today, a San Diego source said. He's a pretty solid veteran, an eight-year veteran who will turn 31 this month. San Diego cut him because they drafted Eric Weddle early in the second round last year and they want the talented Weddle to take over. McCree has 16 career interceptions in 89 starts. He's not a big-time playmaker, but he's viewed as solid all-around. This shows the Bills are willing to consider an upgrade to Ko Simpson, who's coming off a season in which he missed 15 games with a broken ankle. Simpson is a promising prospect. But he's still young. Last spring, the Bills brought in veteran free agent Donovan Darius for a visit as insurance behind Simpson but opted not to sign him. George Wilson, who did better than expected as the replacement free safety after Simpson got hurt, is the current No. 2 on the free safety depth chart.

I don't think McCree would be expensive. He got cut and there have already been a few big money safety signings. The teams that really needed safety help have already gotten it. McCree is the kind of player who probably won't get signed until June 1 at a cut rate price.

Is Simpson having lingering problems with the ankle? I thought he was one of our best performers in the preseason, and I feel a great deal of this team's defensive struggle had to do with him missing.

It doesn't add up to me that they would go after an expensive competitor to Simpson. I would rather wait until August when some older, wiser safeties hit the market for cheap.

I think it's great we are looking to upgrade our defense. Has everyone at the Bills HQ forgot about our lack of scoring last year? How about some offense help!
