Overofficious jerks

Rich Eisen wrote a book last year about life on the NFL Network - how could the world do without a book on that subject? - that has a trivial tidbit on Bills Hall of Famer Marv Levy. During an interview of NFL Films chief Steve Sabol, the question was asked which NFL coach had the foulest mouth? Sabol's answer: Levy. While that answer may have validity during NFL games, it's certainly not true off the field. There are many, many more candidates. My vote from my personal experience might be Ray Rhodes.

Cripes United what does any of this have to do with Marv Levy's potty mouth? How come nobody mentioned that Levy went to college with that over-offcious jerk?

And blame the WGR hijinks on the Tony Kornheiserization of sports talk radio. That arse spends more time on superfluous BS (PTI is unwatchable) and now that he is back on local radio its even worse. Just wondering, does WGR do weekly movie reviews on their shows like WTEM in DC does? As bad as WGR is, I've heard a lot worse in alleged big time cities.

Adam,

My paramount point and opinion in all of this is WGR, due to the fact they are the only true sports radio station, have an opportunity to provide top notch information and engage a rabid base of hockey and football fans and do a substandard job at it. My opinion is that they would rather be comedians and be condescending to their audience rather than engage in some lively discussion with the callers. My point with Bauch is that he produces the show so he could make the show more conducive to caller/host interaction and they simply choose not to. Unfortunately, they are the only game in town and garner an audience due to that fact. The guests are stale and the subject matter doesn't really cover the full scope of sports. For example, you had the NCAA basketball tournament here in Buffalo a few years ago and the majority of the little time they did mention it was based on a contest they were running. No offense, but I believe that a town that supports its teams like Buffalo deserves better than what they are getting from WGR, period.

I have to agree with Adam. Riter basically was the same type of host as Schopp, but Riter seemed to know less about sports in general. I understand being arrogant when there's reason to be and Mike Schopp is smart, intellicual and quick, whereas Riter is just seemed like that guy you'd talk Bills and Sabres with at the Green Buffalo Pub on a Tuesday night. Are we seriously longing for the days of the truth detector and Lamar the supercomputer? WGR made the right move in letting him go. If I were in charge I'd have Jeremy White paired up with Schopp. Too often it seems like Bulldog just goes along with whatever Schopp believes or if he does disagree with Schopp he will be the passive one of the two. Schopp always seems to have the last word in the case of a disagreement. However, Jeremy White is just as passionate in conveying his opinions on the air as Schopp is and thus I think we'd have some great battles and conversations if they paired together. I'd put Bulldog with Dennis Williams at night because Williams is great, but alone sometimes it gets to dry. Adding the boisterous Bulldog would eliminate that problem. In the morning I'd have Corey Griswold replace Jeremy White. Of course don't fix what ain't broke...right.

DC United,

What did you lose the Rookie contest this week or something?

I enjoy Schopp and the Bulldog but I understand people not liking Schopp. How is Greg Bauch a jerk though?

Anyway, there's only one guy ever on WGR who annoyed me so much that I could not listen to him. That was Brad Riter. People rip Schopp for being arrogant and rude, Riter was way worse in both regards.

Adam

John Otto,

While the Stratomatic conversation is riveting, maybe more movie obituary games or listening Schopp laugh hysterically at the hijinx of Greg Buck would be more in order. How Andy Roth is still gainfully employed defys reality. Meanwhile, as Vaudeville is the order of the day, the extension discussion for Ryan Miller and Jason Pominville take a back seat. Keep those bids for the GR tournament coming - White, Bauch, Schopp, Sullivan - 0.0

Do people actually listen to GR55?

Mike:

I really don't care much for any secrets you have about Jerry Sullivan. But I would enjoy hearing more about your wife's tennis exploits and that wild and crazy 1967 Stratomatic baseball league you play in. Maybe you could tell me some stories about going to Bulldog's cottage in Canada. If you could promise me that then I'd take out a second mortgage to play golf with you.

What is wrong with you guys? You would love to play golf with me. I could tell you some good secrets about Jerry Sullivan. Did you know Jerry and I once shared an evening in a heart shaped jacuzzi. It was meant for my wife and I, but my wife was too tired from beating Ralph and Mary Wilson in a couples tennis match...she beat them all by herself. So Jerry joined me for a lovely evening. Anyway, you SOB's are just jealous you don't make as much money as me to make a bid. Enjoy flipping burgers on Monday while I sip on some chardonnay on the course. I'll hang up and listen!

DC United, what's your problem, you don't think five hours on a golf course with Mike Schopp or Jeremy White would be enjoyable? You must not have liked having your wisdom teeth pulled or doing your taxes either. Maybe if you did play golf with one of them you would do us all a favor and beat one of them into submission with a seven iron.

Dennis Green would be another classic potty mouth. As an aside, overofficious jerks is a great title for the condescending losers over at WGR55. If you want a great laugh, take a look at their EBay bidding for their golf tournament and notice that all the folks who want to treat callers like jerks like Schopp, Jeremy White and Mr Comedy Greg Bauch have zero bids. Hey Andy Roth, at some point it will dawn on you that this is Buffalo, NY. When you treat fans with a shred of common decency and not be so pompous as to think the your monopolistic hold on sports radio has no bounds, people will support whatever it is you do. That sound you hear in the distance is Brad Riter. Andy, you remember Brad - the only host you had that gave fans any respect.
