Final thoughts on Bills' preseason opener
-- I was happy to see cornerback Ashton Youboty play well as a starter for injured Terrence McGee. Youboty has been maligned his first two years because tragedy (his mother died during his first training camp) and injuries have prevented the former third-round draft pick from reaching his full potential. Talk among fellow scribes is that he's the most likely veteran to get cut because veteran Will James and rookies Leodis McKelvin and Reggie Corner are locks to make the team behind starters McGee and Jabari Greer. But Youboty's performance Saturday should quite such talk, at least for one week. My hunch is that after the injuries suffered at cornerback last season, the Bills will keep six anyway. Youboty would figure to get the nod over Dustin Fox and seventh-round pick Kennard Cox.
--The good news about the Bills' retooled offensive line was it didn't get Trent Edwards killed. Langston Walker held up pretty well at left tackle, while Kirk Chambers held his ground on the right side. But both had false start penalties with Redskins defensive and former Miami Dolphin Jason Taylor lined up in front of them. A bigger test will come on Thursday against Pittsburgh's blitz-happy defense.
--Did you notice that run by Marshawn Lynch on his first carry? He didn't gain many yards, but it wasn't from a lack of trying. He broke two tackles before it took about five Redskins to bring him down, and even then he tried to fight through the mass of bodies. This guy is a brute with the football in his hands. He should feast against defenses that tackle poorly, and maybe against those that can tackle. He's still not talking to the media, but he seems to be poised to make a lot of noise on the field this season.
