The Gonzo Countdown
About four hours remain before the Kansas City Chiefs have to pull the trigger on a Tony Gonzalez deal or put the gun away.
The Bills are believed to have been the most earnest suitor from the outset, reportedly offering a third-round pick in exchange for the 32-year-old All-World tight end. However, interest it believed to have heated up across the league, with the New York Giants, drubbed in Cleveland Monday night, reconsidering their position. The Giants originally had said they would go no higher than a sixth-round pick, but their lack of production at TE has them rethinking. Remember, they obtained picks from New Orleans in the Jeremy Shockey deal.
There's been speculation that Gonzalez is interested in going only to the Giants, which may be true although it's a departure from his initial stance. And there's speculation that, having announced plans to honor Gonzo Sunday, the Chiefs have decided that a deal isn't in their best interests. Do they have to move Gonzo? Kansas City Star columnist Joe Posnanski thinks so.
How far do the Bills go to make a deal? First-round picks are off limits, but anything else is worth considering. Doubtless the draft is the way to build a franchise, and they've done that well. That's just it. They're young. Their pressing needs are few. They're perfectly situated to mortgage a bit of the future for the opportunity to enhance their present.

Buffalo, be it the Bills or Sabres, or even in socio-political areas, still chooses to do things their own "unique" way, rather than make a statement that says, "We are serious about being cutting-edge NOW!"
Another one of many opportunities missed in Buffalo sports(or other things) history.

I need to vent a little bit more, today was the trade deadline and there have been no comments from the Buffalo News writers since 11:55. However there are weblinks and blog new postings for the Sabres on an off day 2 games into the season!!!

I trust Yahoo sports as far as I can throw Yahoo sports. and since it isn't tangible, that's not very far.
That being said, I still thought it was a pipe dream. But there is still 20 minutes left.

Yahoo Sports updated an article at 3:06 the President of the KC Chiefs said that he is not trading anyone.

A high draft choice is not a good idea in for a 32 year old pro who has a lot of hard miles on him.

I'd love to see this happen, but I think that is just wishful thinking.

If Gonzalez improves Buffalo's position in the standings, the pick will be worth even less next year than it will be if he stays on the team. Something to consider.

The Bills would be foolish if they don't make this happen. Gonzalez still has gas in the tank and would be an instant upgrade in the team's short and medium passing game.
If Gonzo nixes a trade to the Bills, that's one thing, but if Buffalo balks because they don't want to give up an extra pick, I think it'll be a big mistake. This team is ready to challenge now and Gonzo makes them even better. This team is flush with young talent - it can sacrifice a couple picks to improve the chances for victory now.

I'd be willing to give up a third and a fifth OR a second. Look, they're going to burn multiple picks trying to find the right tight end. The proof is in the number of picks they've spent on the position over the last several years. They should be willing to give up one or two of those picks for 2-3 years of top-flight production.

They need to pull the trigger on this one. As far as I can see, anything but a first rounder is worth getting him. Another target for Trent Edwards and another vet on the offense. No brainer.

Gonzalez would be miss placed in buffalo. unless the bills put plays in for him. he on the other hand has to look at buffalo as a great up and coming team . do you think Evans will like the pressure removed from him no more double teams. OK go for it bills

The Bills should trade for Gonzo! The blocking and receiving that they will inherit will be worth the price of a draft pick or two. He would also take loads of heat off of Evans.

How can you say they did not use a TE in the Super Bowl years? The K-Gun was named after McKellar and Metzelaars was a frequent target.
Posted by: Tom | October 14, 2008 at 01:13 PM
The Bills have NEVER ever really used a tight end as a solid target in their receving corps. Even in the Super Bowl years they never featured the tight end as a 1 to 2 punch.
If they go after Tony G - they need to use him ...
