Jauron on the defensive

DANA POINT, Calif. -- The AFC Coaches Breakfast took place this morning and to my surprise, Bills coach Dick Jauron did not have the busiest table. That belonged to Denver first-year coach Josh McDaniels, who was surround by a horde of reporters because of the Jay Cutler situation.

However, Jauron couldn't escape the inevitable questions about the Bills' newest acquisition: Terrell Owens. Between 12 and 15 different reporters peppered Jauron about the decision to sign Owens and the risks involved. Jauron handled most of the inquiries by repeatedly pointing to Owens' career statistics.

But the usually stoic Jauron became a bit agitated when NBCSports.com columnist Tom Curran continued to press him about Owens' soured relationship with his previous three quarterbacks.

"I start by saying that he's won a lot of games,'' Jauron answered. "The goal is to win games and get to the playoffs.''

"At what price?" Curran asked.

Jauron replied: "That's not my thing to decide. We're not winning enough games. Our goal is to fight and get into a playoff spot.''

Asked how he would protect young quarterback Trent Edwards from Owens possibly doing what he did to Jeff Garcia, Donovan McNabb and Tony Romo, Jauron shot back, "I don't think he needs protecting from anyone. He can protect himself.''

Jauron was told he would be bucking history if Owens is well-behaved the entire season.

"That's all right. I don't mind bucking history,'' Jauron said.

By harping on Owens' career numbers, Jauron was trying to justify the Bills' decision. Instead it only made him seem like he was being defensive about it.

Everyone knows why Jauron likes Owens. Jauron has to win to keep his job and he think Owens can help him do that. The reporters were hoping he'd come out and just say that.
