Wednesday OTA
The defense threw a ton of blitzes at the offense in Wednesday's organized team activity practice in the Bills Fieldhouse, and the offense was on its heels early in the workout.
In the first 15 plays of 11-on-11 work, the offense completed only 3 of 12 pass attempts. Ten of those plays were with the first-teamers, five were the second-teamers on both sides of the ball. The offense got its bearings better during the second 11-on-11 session, hitting numerous shorter completions.
Said quarterback Trent Edwards: "I felt like every single team period we had, Bryan (Scott) and Donte (Whitner) and Ko (Simpson) and George (Wilson) were all coming every single play. That’s tough on an offense when you have a down-the-field pass called and you have to adjust to it. That’s something we’re goin to face during the season, and I think that's great. I know Perry (Fewell) is doing some great things on defense, he’s coaching those guys very well. We need a good defense to go up against every day. It gets frustrating because you’re sitting there dinking and dunking underneath and throwing hot routes, and that’s not exciting football, really. But that's something we're going to face."
Leodis McKelvin sat out practice, and the BIlls opened in a nickel defense vs. three wide receivers. Rookie Ellis Lankster was starting on the outside at cornerback opposite Terrence McGee. Drayton Florence was covering the slot. Rookie cornerback draftee Cary Harris has been sitting out with an injury, too. Gibran Hamdan took the snaps as the No. 2 QB Wednesday, perhaps due to the heavy blitzing emphasis. Josh Reed, Lee Evans and Derek Schouman caught some good hot-route completions once the offense got going. The best completion was from Edwards to Evans on a fade pattern vs. the blitz for a touchdown in the red zone.
