The Bills today announced the signing of free-agent wide receiver Shaine Smith.
The move comes two days after second-year receiver Stevie Johnson suffered a painful cartilage injury between his ribs. He's out indefinitely. The Bills entered camp short at receiver because second-year men James Hardy and C.J. Hawthorne both opened the summer on the physically unable to perform list. Hardy is coming back from a knee injury, Hawthorne from foot surgery. Veteran backup P.K. Sam has been dinged up a bit, too.
Smith, 6-foot-2 and 189 pounds, is a product of Hofstra University. He entered the NFL as a free-agent signee of the St. Louis Rams in 2007 and spent part of that season on the Jets' practice squad.
