Long completions will usually be the highlight of training camp practices, and Trent Edwards completed three of them this morning, one to Lee Evans deep down the left sideline and two to Terrell Owens. Evans got behind Leodis McKelvin in 11-on-11 drills. Owens got wide open on the left side fo the field and scampered down the sideline for a touchdown. A little later, he got behind McKelvin for a 40-yard strike down the left sideline. He had to slow up just a tad to catch it. Kawika Mitchell might have hit the quarterback on that play if it had been a game.
Kyle Williams asserted his presence in the middle of the defensive line. He penetrated to blow up a run by Dominic Rhodes. He got pressure to force a throw-away by Edwards. Paul Posluszny looked good in coverage on Marshawn Lynch on a scramble-pass by Edwards. Owens had one drop on a pass over the middle. Backup QB Ryan Fitzpatrick had two good completions back-to-back. he hit Roscoe Parrish on a deep out then hit a wude-open Stevie Johnson down the left sideliine. Xavier Omon made a good blitz pickup to allow that pass to get off.
Seth McKinney is working at right guard and Kirk Chambers at left guard with the starting unit.
The second-team defense this morning included: Ryan Denney, John McCargo, Marcus Smith and Copeland Bryan on the line, Ashlee Palmer (weak), Pat Thomas (middle) and Nic Harris (strong) at linebacker, with Ashton Youboty, Drayton Florence, George Wilson and Ko Simpson in the secondary. Chris Ellis mixed in with Bryan. Smith was up from the third team today because Marcus Stroud is sitting out with a tweaked hamstring.
