Bills to add 2nd ST coach

The Buffalo Bills will hire former Detroit Lions special teams coach Stan Kwan to be the assistant to special teams coordinator Bruce DeHaven, head coach Chan Gailey said today.

It's common for teams to have a special teams assistant coach. It's not too common for the assistant to be a veteran lead special teams coach. Kwan was special teams coordinator for Detroit from 2007 to 2009. He was fired by Lions coach Jim Schwartz after this past season. Kwan brings 19 years of NFL experience to the job. He was special teams assistant for three years in Detroit before taking over that job. He was special teams assistant in Arizona for three years, in Detroit for four years before that and an assistant in several capacities in San Diego from 1991 to 1996.

The Bills for the first time have co-coordinators in the strength and conditioning area - John Gamble and Eric Ciano. Gamble spent 16 years with the Miami Dolphins. Ciano comes to Buffalo from Georgia Tech.

Said Gailey: "Stan is a former head guy himself. We feel like we’ve really strengthened ourselves in the strength and conditioning area to have two guys of that ability."

"We seem to specialize in a lot of areas of football," Gailey said. "That is one area we have not specialized as much. In the strength and conditioning area I tried to hire two guys who I think both are head coaches in that area, so they can both spend time specializing in areas, and that will overlap from time to time."

How will the strength duties be divided?

“For the most part it’ll be position group oriented,” Gailey said. “John Gamble will work more with the line. Eric Ciano will work more with the defensive backs, wide receivers. They will have overlap with some of the other positions.”

Gailey said his staff is mostly filled. He said a couple more appointments likely will be made next week.
