The Road to the Draft: QB Christian Ponder

THE ROAD TO THE DRAFT

Christian Ponder, QB, Florida State
6-foot-2, 229 pounds
Draft projection: Second round

Lowdown: Ponder has just about everything you want in a quarterback, except great play on the field. He went 21-10 as a starter for the Seminoles. As a junior he completed 68.8 percent of his passes with 14 TDs and 7 INTs in nine games, then separated his shoulder. As a senior, his completion percentage dropped to 61.5 percent, but he had 20 TDs and 8 INTs. He played through a throwing-elbow injury as a senior. He has good mobility. He has better-than-average arm strength. He’s smart. He graduated in two and a half years with a degree in finance. He was the only FBS player in the country to complete his MBA before his senior year. He’s more of a dink-and-dunk thrower. He draws comparisons to Chad Pennington. But Pennington had great results in college. Watching Florida State’s games, it just looked like something with missing with Ponder. Was it largely attributable to his injury? That's what scouts must decide. Like TCU's Andy Dalton, don't count on Ponder lasting past the 50th pick.
