As expected the Bills placed nose tackle Kyle Williams on injured reserve Tuesday with a left foot injury.
Williams has been suffering from the injury since training camp, and was taken out of the lineup starting in Week Six against the New York Giants.
He traveled to North Carolina to meet with a foot specialist in a last-gasp effort to save his season, but it was determined the injury – which is believed to be bone spurs affecting his Achilles tendon – was too much to overcome this year.
To fill the vacant roster spot, the team signed veteran kicker Dave Rayner. A career 73-percent kicker, Rayner will fill-in for veteran Rian Lindell, who is expected to miss four to six weeks with a shoulder injury.
Rayner was a former sixth-round pick of the Indianapolis Colts in 2005 who is well traveled. He has played for seven different teams in his seven NFL seasons, most recently with the Oakland Raiders this season as an injury replacement for Sebastian Janikowski.
Last year, Rayner, 29, appeared in eight games with the Detroit Lions after Jason Hanson was placed on injured reserve.
The Bills also released offensive tackle Ed Wang from their injured reserve list.
