Fairfield-Canisius game analysis

Game analysis: Both Canisius and Fairfield suffered through a poor shooting night, but Frank Turner, the MAAC’s leading scorer, was held to just two field goals and the Stags hit the offensive boards hard for a 58-52 win over the Griffs.

How Canisius Lost: The only thing coach Tom Parrotta talked about to his team was being outrebounded on the offensive glass, 27-14. Cut that number in half, and the Griffs probably go home winners.

Turning point: It was a see-saw battle until Greg Logins missed a three-pointer that was rebounded by Tomas Vazquez-Simmons, but Vazquez-Simmons missed the entire rim on the follow and Fairfield’s Anthony Johnson was eventually fouled by Griffs guard Robert Goldsberry. Johnson made one of two free throws with 23.9 seconds left before Turner hurried the ball down court and fired an air ball that sailed out of bounds. Canisius was eventually able to foul Hawkins, who made two free throws to seal the victory.

Player of the Game: Anthony Johnson had eight offensive rebounds and scored 12 points.

Stat of the Game: We’ve already mentioned the wide rebounding numbers, but Fairfield coach Ed Cooley wasn’t pleased with the 5-for-28 shooting from long range.

He Said It: “We just have to be tougher. It comes down to you against the other man. Who’s going to get it? We have to get the ball.” – Canisius guard Julius Coles.

In the House: 2,616 for the doubleheader.

What's Next: Fairfield gets Niagara at 7 p.m. Monday in the Gallagher Center. Canisius hosts Iona Monday at 7.
