Canisius College AD Bill Maher said men's basketball coach Tom Parrotta will return for his fifth season next year. Parrotta has a year remaining on his contract.
Canisius (13-15, 7-9 MAAC) is currently in seventh place in the league with two regular season games remaining at Loyola and Rider before the start of the MAAC Tournament. The 13 wins are the most under Parrotta and the program's most since finishing 20-11 in 2000-01.
"What we always look for is, 'Did the team get better each year,' " Maher said. "We were better last year than we were two years ago, we were better this year than where we were last year and the expectations will be better next year. We want to see contunued progress, we haven't won all of them and that's our goal. Everytime we go out we want to win the game. But I think there's been good progress."
The Golden Griffins are seeking a seed in the MAAC Tournament meaning they would avoid the first round and play the No. 3 seed in the quarterfinals.
"We're moving in a positive direction and I think where our team is right now, we've taken a step from last year," Maher said. "We control our own destiny so to speak to get that sixth spot in the league so I think we're in a good spot."
Parrotta is 42-79 and 20-51 in the MAAC in four seasons at Canisius. He'll have four starters back - all seniors - and sixth man Greg Logins for the 2010-11 season.
"I think as a program we're improving everyday," Parrotta said. "We're in the mix now and I feel that we can beat anybody and I throw Siena in that category if we take care of the basketball. ... I think we could be in a lot better place than we are right now but that's basketball. I like where it's going."
