Bona-Duquesne Game Analysis

St. Bonaventure 92, Duquesne 80

How Bona Won: It all seems so easy when outside sharpshooter Chris Matthews is filling it up from three. When Matthews made his first four from beyod the arc the Dukes had to adjust, and that provided more room to operate on the inside. The end result: a 56 percent shooting night from the field, Bona's second straight game of 55 percent or better. Good thing, too, because the Bonnies weren't going to win this game with their defense. The Dukes rolled through the lane for 54 points in the paint.

Turning Point: Dukes had cut Bona led to 51-46 with 16:06 remaining when Michael Davenport nailed his only three of the night. Matthews followed up a short time little with one of his six and the Bonnies were back up by 10 and in control.

Player of the Game: Matthews set the tone from long range and finished with 21 points, three assists and two steals in his final regular-season game at the RC.

Stat of the Game: Jonathan Hall went 6 for 6 from the foul line against Rhode Island. He was 5 for 5 against Duquesne. Before that he had made 4 of his last 11 and was shooting 60 percent on the season.

He Said It: Bona coach Mark Schmidt on the change in attitude around his team: "I think the players think the coaches have an idea, and the coaches are thinking now, man, we got good players. We got better players than we had when we were in our four-game losing streak.' The players during the four-game losing streak probably thought I was nuts. And now they think that I'm Red Auerbach. Winning's terrific. Winning solves a lot of problems."

In the House: The Reilly Center would have been rocking if school was in session. But the students will be back next week if the Bonnies land an Atlantic 10 play-in game, which would be the first postseason game in the Reilly Center since an NIT game in 1995. As it was, 4,139 showed up for this one.

Next Up: The Bonnies finish up at No. 25 Xavier on Saturday. Fortunately for them it's not necessarily a must-win.
