ALBANY -- It looks as if Canisius' string of failure in the MAAC Tournament quarterfinals is going to continue. The Griffs were trailing Fairfield, 35-14, after a positively dreadful first half in the Times Union Center. Canisius took an early 9-4 lead, then got outscored 31-5 over the rest of the half.
The Griffs shot 6-27 from the floor in the opening half, 1 of 8 from three-point range. They were outrebounded, 26-17, by Fairfield's bigger and more aggressive front line. Derek Needham, the league's top freshman, scored 11 points for the second-seeded Stags in the first half.
Robert Goldsberry, who came into the game averaging 3.1 points a game, led the Griffs with five points in the first half -- all in the first two minutes.
