Millinghaus commits to St. Bonaventure

Point guard Derrick Millinghaus, who once played at Nichols School, is returning to Western New York next season with St. Bonaventure. Millinghaus, who currently attends Queen City Prep in North Carolina, gave the Bonnies a verbal commitment Monday night.

"Yes, it feels good to be a Bona," Millinghaus told me via Facebook this morning. "I think that with me in the picture now we have a very good chance of winning the A-10 Conference and a chance to make it in the NCAA tournament."

Millinghaus played at Schnectady High School last season where he dropped 26 points and grabbed eight boards a game last season. Among the schools he drew interest from were Siena, Iowa, UMass, Penn State, Santa Clara, Iona, Vermont, Fairfield, Maryland Eastern Shore and Rider.

Here's a scouting report from ESPN.com:

Strengths: Millinghaus is a scoring guard who makes plays going to the rim or from the perimeter. He is very good with the ball and is capable of blowing right by his defender, making quick change of direction moves, or simply bullying his way to the rim. He makes the most of his sturdy frame, uses his body well to handle against pressure, keeps the ball very low to the ground, and also knows how to change his speeds in the backcourt. Millinghaus is both quick and athletic, a good on the ball defender, and a consistent shooting threat from behind the three-point line.

Weaknesses: Millinghaus is a shoot first pass second guard and not a pure point. He can pound the air out of the ball and force bad shots, doesn't know how to play away from the ball, nor make those around him better. He can get out of control at times and will also try to do too much with the ball at times causing unneccsary turnovers. Physically, he is also a little undersized.

Bottom Line: Millinghaus is a quick and athletic guard who makes plays going to the rim, defends the ball, and makes open shots. He needs to learn to be more of a pure point guard, distribute the ball, and gets his offense within the flow of the team concept.
