Reggie Witherspoon has signed a two-year extension that keeps him under contract to coach UB basketball through 2015-16.
“I am pleased to be able to sign Reggie to this extension,” AD Warde Manuel said in a press release today. “He has been an extremely successful basketball coach both on and off the court in his development of the young men in our program. In addition to that, he has served as a tremendous ambassador for the university and the Buffalo community as well. Based on last year’s performance and recent additions to the team, I look forward to a bright future for our men’s basketball program."
Good move? Definitely. Witherspoon has been criticized by some UB alums for failing to win the MAC. But he's been to the title game twice, he cares about and graduates his players, and recent recruiting classes have set the program up for a golden opportunity to get over the hump.
It's going to be a brutally tough year in the MAC East. Seemingly everybody's teeming with quality returnees. The key for UB will be the play of point guard Jarod Oldham, who takes over for Byron Mulkey. If Oldham can score a little, at least keep teams honest, that opens up all kinds of opportunity for post players like Javon McCrae and Mitchell Watt and wing sharpshooter Zach Filzen. The key is to finish top four overall in the conference in the new playoff format. Otherwise, running the table becomes a Herculean task.
