UB 68, Cornell 59

Hello from Alumni Arena. It's UB (1-0) against Cornell (1-1) tonight. Bulls beat St. Peter's 72-65, in season-opener. Cornell bounced back from an opening 79-58 loss at Bona with a 76-61 home win over Binghamton.

UB has signed point guard Jarryn Skette, a Brompton, Ont., native currently playing at Bridgton Academy in Maine. Skeete is 6-foot-3, 180 pounds, and rated the 39th best point guard prospect by ESPN (for those who put stock in such things). UB already had signed Stan Wier, a 6-3 guard out of East Aurora.

 FIRST HALF

UB  12-5, 15:07: Blazing start by Bulls. Mitchell Watt has eight points and two assists and has factored in every UB basket. Javon McCrea looked to be headed for SportsCenter when he soared through the lane for a tomahawk jam. But he slammed it off the back rim and Reggie Witherspoon begged without success for a foul. It did look like McCrea was clipped on the arm. ... Tony Watson just checked in. He sat out opener after undergoing an scope on his knee. ... Lighting issue here. Apparently they're not supposed to turn off the lights during the anthem, merely shutter them. Takes 20 minutes for them to kick back on. In the meantime, they're playing on a semi-darkened court.

UB 19-9, 11:12: Filzen hits his first three of the night. Bulls playing with a lot of passion. Let's see if they can sustain it better than they did in opener. Bulls 8 of 13 from field with assists on six of seven baskets.

UB 21-12, 7:39: It's gotten sloppy. Went almost three minutes without a point until McCrea hit a layup off a spin move through the lane. Bulls have made just 1 of last 5 from field. Cornell 5 of 16 on the night. ... Great to see colleague Allen Wilson in the house with Joe Corey.

UB 24=22, 1:45: Hmmm. This is obviously a work in progress. Bulls struggling big time as Witherspoon goes deeper into bench with rotations. Very little offensive flow. Quick shots off one or two passes. Definitely not what Bulls are looking for. Cornell has scored last nine.

HALFTIME: UB 29-24... Watt reenters and scores UB's last five. He has 13.

SECOND HALF

UB 36-27, 15:59: Bulls score first seven points of half before Cornell counters with a Chris Wroblewski three. Filzen nailed a three, McCrea scored on a follow and Watt dunked off a sweet pass from Barnett during a one-minute flurry.

TIED 41-41 11:07: Bulls really struggling for continuity in their rotations. Backup point guard Tony Watson having a tough night in first game back off knee scope. Big Red on a 7-0 run capped by a Josh Figini jumper that tied. Bulls ultra-sloppy with ball.

UB 46-44, 7:57: PG Jarod Oldham scores his first points of the night off a drive as Bulls inch back ahead. UB already at 19 turnovers for the night. Cornell's zone has disrupted Bulls inside passing game.

UB 58-51, 2:16: McCrea taking over. He has 17, 13 in the second half.

FINAL: UB 68, Cornell 59 ...19 each for Watt and McCrea.
