O'Brien competes in shot put

University at Buffalo's Becky O'Brien competed in the shot put preliminaries at the U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials in Euguene, Ore., tonight.

O'Brien finished 16th in the field of 23. The top 12 advanced to the finals.

O'Brien's first throw was 53-0 1/4 (16.16 meters). She fouled on her next two attempts.

Otto just misses finals at Olympic swim trials

Courtney Otto just missed a place in the finals of the 200 butterfly at the Olympic swimming trials in Omaha, Neb., tonight.

Otto, a West Seneca native who just completed her freshman year at Harvard, finished ninth in the semifinals. The top eight times advanced to the finals.

Otto swam a 2:11.35. The eight-place time by Shannon Draves was 2:11.00.

Courtney Otto advances to semis at Olympic Trials

West Seneca West graduate and Harvard sophomore Courtney Otto advanced to tonight's semifinals of the 200 butterfly at the U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials in Omaha, Neb. 

Otto had the 11th best time in this morning's preliminaries, swimming 2:12.22. The top 16 advance to the semifinals, which should be part of the NBC national broadcast at 8 p.m. tonight. Otto will swim in the second heat. The top eight times advance to the finals, scheduled for Friday night. The top finishers in the finals make the U.S. Olympic team.

In her freshman year at Harvard, Otto won the 400 IM and was part of the winning 800 free relay team at the Ivy League Championships. She placed second in the 200 fly and the 500 free at the Ivy League Championships.

At the NCAA Championships, she 24th in the 200 fly, 30th in the 400 IM and 54th in the 500 free.

Big 4 results from Olympic swim trials

A trio of Big 4 swimmers participated in the U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials in Omaha, Neb. this morning all in the men's 100 freestyle.

University at Buffalo's Matt Hogan had the best showing, placing 63rd in the 165-man field with a time of 50.90. St. Bonaventure sophomore James Martin was 82nd with a time of 51.14 while Buffalo's Mike Dugan was 141st in 52.00.

Three Buffalo athletes are in action on Friday. Matt Schwippert (Iroquois) will compete in the 200 backstroke, Brittney Kuras in the 100 free and Alie Schirmers in the 200 breaststroke.

Willis to represent USA at world rowing championships

Last month, Clarence native Cornelia Willis graduated from the University at Buffalo. Next month, she'll be heading to Lithuania as part of Team USA in the World Rowing Under 23 Championships.

Willis will represent Team USA in the Women's Lighweight quad after her boat won its qualifying race today at the Under 23 World Championship Trials at Mercer Lake in West Windsor, N.J. Her boat, from GMS Rowing out of Connecticut, won in 6:46.799.

Willis, who was a biology major at UB, had never sculled before attending her club camp in Connecticut. At Buffalo, she did sweep rowing, where athletes are responsible for only one oar. In sculling, each rower is responsible for two oars.

“From my understanding, this is the first UB rower to ever represent USA in the World Championships, which is obviously an unbelievable accomplishment for Cornelia,” said lightweight coach Kerri Kanaley in a UB press release. “I have been fortunate enough to be her coach over the last three years and I don’t know anyone who deserves it more. She is an incredible student-athlete and has more heart than anyone I know. Proud isn’t a strong enough word to describe how I feel today, and I am just so happy for her.”

The World Rowing Under 23 Championships will be held July 11-15.

Kuras competes in Olympic trials

University at Buffalo sophomore Brittney Kuras swam two of her four events at the U.S. Swimming Olympic Trials this morning in Omaha, Neb. 

In the 200 free, she placed 34th out of 99 finishers with a time of 2:01.59. In the 200 IM, she was 53rd out of 113 swimmers with a time of 2:18.99.

The top 16 times from the preliminaries advanced to tonight's semifinals.

Tomorrow from the Bulls, Matt Hogan and Matt Dugan with both compete in the 100 free.

First day for Bulls at Olympic Swim Trials

Matt Schwippert and Matt Hogan kicked off the University at Buffalo's appearance in the U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials in Omaha, Neb., Tuesday morning.

Schwippert, a native of East Aurora and graduate of Iroquois, placed 54th out of 127 finishers in the 100 backstroke. Schwippert swam a 57.03.

Hogan finished 85th out of 124 in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:52.95.

Wednesday, Brittney Kuras swims two of her four events, competing in the 200 free and the 200 IM.
