The talk is heating up on the web today about possible expansion for the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. William Paxton of the Connecticut Post wrote a blog item this afternoon saying that the conference is intersted in adding Monmouth and Quinnipiac into the fold.
The MAAC is looking to replace Loyola (Md.) which is leaving for the Patriot League. That loss leaves the MAAC with 10 teams. Sources say the league has been interested in expanding to 11 or 12 teams to guard against dropping to single-digit teams in the future should the college conference shuffle continue down the road.
The piece was picked up also by the Albany Times-Union.
Both schools, currently in the Northeast Conference, fit the MAAC profile of small, private schools in the Northeast. Monmouth is located in New Jersey, about an hour away from Rider, while Quinnipiac is in Hamden, Conn.
Sacred Heart, also in the NEC, had previously been talked about as a possible MAAC addition.
The MAAC presidents have upcoming meetings. An annoucement on the topic could come as early as the end of this week.
