Songwriter, guitarist, activist, and businesswoman Ani DiFranco will be honored by the Winnipeg Folk Festival on November 22nd. During the yearly gala fundraiser "Folk Festival in the City" - held in Birds Hill Provincial Park, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada - DiFranco will receive the Festival's Artistic Achievement Award.
Winnipeg Folk Festival organizers cited DiFranco's work as a performer - she first appeared at the Festival in 1992 - as well as her groundbreaking efforts as an independent artist, record label head, and champion of eco-friendly small business here in her home town of Buffalo, as proof of her enduring impact on modern folk music.
Past recipients of the award include Billy Bragg, Loreena McKennitt, Sarah Harmer, and Leon Redbone.
"It is an honor to be recognized with such esteemed company," said DiFranco in a press release. "I am happy to inspire new artists to be in control of their careers and make responsible choices when running their businesses."
