Hamburg native Jankowski to discuss new book on Eastern Europe

Buffalo area native Tomek Jankowski will discuss his new book "Eastern Europe! Everything You Need to Know About the History (and More) of a Region That Shaped our World, and Still Does" this Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. at Talking Leaves Books, 3158 Main Street in Buffalo.  The event is free and open to the public, and copies of Jankowski's new book will be available for purchase.

Jankowski--who grew up in Hamburg and earned a degree in history at the University at Buffalo--worked, studied, and traveled in Poland, Hungary, and other regions of Eastern Europe from the late 1980s to the mid-1990s, gaining a functional literacy of several languages in the process.  He currently lives in Londonderry, New Hampshire, where he is a senior analyst at a research firm that specializes in producing market analysis for the management consulting world.  Part of his work involves writing private reports focusing on Eastern Europe and other emerging markets regions, as well as the financial services industry.

Library Journal describes the book as "a sweeping history of Eastern Europe [that] does an admirable job of getting information in on nearly every language and religious and cultural group that has existed in the area, a commendable feat. . . . Jankowski writes in an intelligent, accessible style, and it is easy to read the book from start to finish, or just to pick out sections on certain countries or events. . . . A meaty but not overly challenging read for history buffs and students, Eastern Europe scholars, and tourists with more than a passing interest in the region."

While noting the book presents a broad overview of  "nations and peoples living amid constantly shifting boundaries in a centuries-old battleground between East and West" that is well-suited for academic courses, Publisher's Weekly adds "Jankowski displays an ease and familiarity with cultural minutiae while briskly covering intense topics of genocide, religion, and Communist implosion. He intersperses sober descriptions with frequent "useless trivia" bits, covering key figures or issues—some lighthearted, some heartbreaking—under humorous titles such as Austria-Hungary as a Bug on the Windshield."

"Eastern Europe!" is published by New Europe Books, the Williamstown, Massachusetts based publisher of quality trade nonfiction and fiction focusing on or about  the former Eastern Bloc.  New Europe Books was founded and is headed by Amherst native Paul Olchvary, who will also be on hand for Jankowski's Talking Leaves Books presentation.
