Bad times for New York, New York

I've just about already stuck my fork deep into the Yankees' postseason hopes and Johnny Damon's sad act in center field Tuesday in Toronto was the key reason for a 2-1 loss to the Blue Jays. Don't look now but the Jays will be ahead of the Yanks if they win the final two games of this series.

Move from the boys from the Bronx over to Queens and things are much better in the standings but just as bad in the news department. Is it really feasible for the Mets to win a division without a closer? We may be close to finding out because it's looking more and more like Billy Wagner's funky elbow could keep him shut down for the season.

Even if they get into the postseason -- no guarantee after the famous choke of '07 -- I can't imagine the Mets going very far into October without some viable bullpen options.

To use your recent references, the Yanks are done, well done, and also burnt toast.

Oh cry me a river about the freaking Yankees. The hand-wringing and breast-beating going on about them is highly amusing. Maybe when they are eliminated from the playoff race the News photo editors can put tears streaming down the cheeks of Jeter in that stupid picture at the top of this blog.

As for the Mets, sadly, I have to agree. This Wagner injury is looking disastrous. But even with him their bullpen isn't good enough for October. Joe Smith, in particular, is useless. Schoenweis, Heilman and Sanchez are also far too shaky. And they need to send that Kunz kid back to AAA as soon as possible.

"It's up to you, New York, New York!"

Ah - wonderful times to root against NY baseball teams.
