Emil Brown never even made it to Coca-Cola Field. The veteran outfielder was called up from the Bisons to the Mets, leaving Norfolk in time to be in uniform for Wednesday's game in Pittsburgh. Brown was 5 for 16 since joining the Bisons as a free agent and replaces Ramon Martinez (broken pinkie) on the New York roster.
Tough break for the Bisons, too. I liked the Brown signing as a veteran outfielder to help the lineup in the wake of the Fernando Martinez callup. Just nothing the Mets could do about taking him; they are thin, thin, thin all the way around. Will be interesting what happens Sunday when Ryan Church is able to come off the DL. Do they keep F-Mart? Possible. Church is not one of manager Jerry Manuel's favorites but both Gary Sheffield and Angel Pagan are hobbling.
This update from Pittsburgh: After not being in the original lineup, Carlos Beltran proclaimed himself well enough to play tonight. But the Mets did not post a new lineup before the game was rained out. Beltran said he thinks his illness was not swine flu, but actually food poisoning. He said he lost 5-10 pounds.
