---It's Draft Day beginning at 6 p.m. on MLB.com and the MLB Network. That means it's the Stephen Strasburg Show. Or maybe that should mean it's the Scott Boras Show. Whatever. The kid from San Diego State is going to the Nationals with the first pick (if he doesn't, they should just contract them. Or maybe ship them back to Montreal). Then the fun begins and let's see if he signs and pitches in the bigs this year.
---The draft doesn't have the cachet of the NFL (thankfully, there are no baseball Mel Kipers) or NBA. No local interest like the NHL. But it's having more immediate impact. Look at the 2005 draft, considered one of the best first rounds in recent memory. Upton, Gordon, Zimmerman, Braun, Tulowitzki, Pelfrey, McCutchen, Bruce, Ellsbury, Rasmus. (OK, Lance Broadway at No. 15 and he just joined the Bisons).
More in 2006 like Longoria and Lincecum. In 2007, there was David Price, Matt Wieters and Matt LaPorta. Last year gave us James Beckham in the first round who has made the White Sox. So we'll see what tonight brings. And over the next two days, we'll get word on Orchard Park's Kyle Hoppy and the Canisius College tandem of Kevin Mailloux and Kevin Mahoney.
---I'll be at the Bisons/Indy game tonight. Yesterday's 2-1 win over Indy was the first win of the season at home scoring three or fewer runs after 19 losses. Yeesh.
---My eyes and ears will be all over the Internet too. Stanley Cup. NBA. Yanks-Red Sox. Mets-Phillies. Great night.
---And the biggest news I'm sure you were yearning for: I am officially a tweeter, succumbing to the temptation of Twitter. Look me up at BNHarrington (BN..Buffalo News..get it?). Should automatically update there when we update here.
---Mike Harrington
