Herd grapevine Friday edition
---I hate to say I told you so, but I told you so. Fernando Martinez's sore knee was actually a torn meniscus and he had surgery over the all-star break that will shelve him 6-8 weeks. (And thanks for the shout out on this topic from Toby Hyde at the awesome Mets Minor League Blog).
Their 20-year-old top prospect has a sore knee and they have him play through and give him cortisone? What about all the other injuries this year that guys played through. Think Delgado, Reyes, Perez, Beltran, Putz. Don't the trainers and doctors all need to be fired here? Or do Omar Minaya and Tony Bernazard create a culture to shame players into taking the field even when they can't? It's one of the great questions surrounding a miserable season in a miserable organization.
---Nice to see the Bisons started the post-break segment of the season so well last night. Another nice no-show at home, where they're 15-33. I know none of you people have seen it but they are actually 17-22 on the road. No idea how.
---As for tonight's game against Toledo, I know it's pouring out there and has been for an hour. But keep in mind the Bisons don't make the call on this one because it's the Mud Hens' only trip to town. This game is in the hands of the umpires and they'll usually wait 45 minutes after the start time unless it looks like there's no hope. So don't be surprised to have no decision on the 7:35 start until after 8 p.m.
----Have gotten a few emails about Jason Cooper and I can tell you he signed with the indepedent St. Paul Saints of the American Association. Thanks to Bisons booster club president Charlie Greene for that nugget. Cooper is batting .339 through 16 games and you can follow his stats here.

bburbs: Wily Mo remains unsigned. That could be a sign he's looking into Japan.

Did anyone think Jerry Manuel was joking? Today's news quoted him on Sheffield's status. "He's got cramps. Surgery's on Thursday."
Mets "culture"? Maybe mold incubates something. It's wet enough.

Mike:
Prediction. It's raining like crazy in East Amherst. You know the downtown stadium can't take too much water. Can anyone say DH on Saturday
