Herd pick up Gomez

The Toronto Blue Jays announced that they have claimed 2012 IL MVP Mauro Gomez off waivers from the Boston Red Sox and optioned him to the Buffalo Bisons.

Gomez, 28, hit .310 with 34 doubles, 24 home runs and 74 RBIs in 100 games with the Pawtucket Red Sox. He led the league in slugging percentage (.589) and finished in the Top 5 in average (2nd, .310), home runs (T3rd, 24), doubles, (T3rd, 34) and RBIs (5th, 74).

Gomez also made his Major League debut with Boston last year and hit .275 with two home runs and 17 RBI in 37 games.

To make room on their 40-man roster, the Toronto Blue Jays designed RHP Dave Bush for assignment.
