Outfielder Melky Cabrera and right handed pitcher Sergio Santos have joined the Buffalo Bisons on Major League injury rehab assignments.
Cabrera has been on the disabled list since June 27 with left knee tendinitis. He batted .278 with three home runs, driving in 28 runs in 78 games with the Toronto Blue Jays this season.
Santos pitched in five games with the Jays before going on the disabled list on April 15 with a right triceps strain.
Thursday afternoon, Bisons manager Marty Brown said that Cabrera was not in today's Bisons' lineup because it was a travel day for him. He said that Cabrera would be in the lineup on Friday. Santos is expected to throw an inning tonight.
Negrych's Excellent All-Star Adventure: Fresh off his appearance in last night's Triple-A All Star Game in Reno, Nevada, Jim Negrych was back in the Bisons' lineup today. Granted, it's as the designated hitter. Negrych and Mauro Gomez were starters for the International League in last night's Triple-A All-Star contest. Both went 0-for-3 at the plate.
"We would have liked to have performed better individually," Negrych said.
But the experience was incredible for the St. Francis graduate. Especially with the way the Rich family helped the Buffalo players get the most bang for their buck.
"The Riches flew us out there," Negrych said. "It was unbelievable what they did for us. That made sure everything was taken care of. And we flew back right after the game. We're lucky. Some guys weren't getting back to their teams until six o'clock tonight. They treated us so well."
Bisons back from break: The Herd kicks off the final third of the season opening up an eight-game homestand. It starts with a four-game series with the Toledo Mud Hens. Buffalo is 3 1/2 games back of Pawtucket in the IL North Division race.
Thad Weber gets the start for the Bisons and faces his former team. Weber pitched in 52 games with 51 starts for Toledo from 2010-12. He went 14-23 with a 4.75 ERA as a MudHen. This year with the Herd, he is 3-3 with a 2.37 ERA in eight starts.
Vote for Celery: Celery may have never won the mascot race at Coca-Cola Field, but Celery has a chance to win now. At least as a fan favorite. Celery is in the running for the Best Minor League Mascot. There are two rounds of voting, the first window runs until Aug. 1 with a championship round Aug. 1-8. Fans can vote online at www.milb.com/mascotmania or via Twitter by including #MascotMania along with the Bisons Twitter handle @BuffaloBisons. Fans can vote up to 25 times a day via Twitter.
