Support in numbers

I've been getting great emails from people who are also thinking of doing their first triathlon, or other athletic endeavor, and some from people who have already jumped full board into multisport.

Once came from Paul Kindzia a former Niagara Falls native and UB grad who now lives near Atlanta. Along with encouragement came a bit of his background - 10 completed Ironmans. "I bought a bike during the summer of 2003 and immediately came to the conclusion that I was going straight to the Ironman," he wrote to me. "Tough, not very bright."

His website, called A Ticket to Kona, is more than just his training journal. He wants to promote not just the sport of triathlon (and Ironman in particular) but a healthy lifestyle in general. Even if you're secret ultimate goal is only to run a 5K, or next year's Turkey Trot, there's quite a bit of inspiration on his site.

As for me, today's work out is spinning class. The bike is my thing, so this is challenging but not nearly as daunting as those trips to the pool.

And keep emailing and posting your stories on your fitness goals. There's support in numbers.

Just as a little warning when talking to my brother Paul Kindzia or any other Ironman. They are so inspirational and encouraging they will talk you into pushing yourself beyond what you thought possible before you can even say Jack Robinson. Last year I wanted him to help me get into a couple of 5K's. It's been 12 months now and I've so far completed 3 half marathons and a 40K adventure race down in Costa Rica. And believe me, you'd never know it by looking at me. Good luck on your journey, you will be so proud of yourself when you cross that finish line!!!!
