Artisan show in Hamburg welcomes spring

Screen shot 2010-04-24 at 1.54.54 PM HAMBURG -- If you're in the market for theorem paintings, high-quality photography or root planters, an annual show here featuring 186 artisans from around the country has you covered.

These unique handcrafted creations, among others, can be found today and Sunday at Springtime in the Country at the Fairground.

Barbara A. Palmer from BP Folk Art Press uses oil and powdered pigments on hand-dyed fabric and matches them with frames designed by her husband.

"I've done this all my life," she said. "If you had asked me at four years old what I want to be when I grew up I would have said 'artist.'"

Mark Callen, owner of Mark Callen Photography, prints and frames photos of sites around Western New York including HSBC Arena, the Central Terminal and Niagara Falls.

"Buffalo has definitely become my niche," he said. "This past summer my most requested item was Niagara Falls so I went out and shot that and got a bunch of different views."

And David Emmons came here from Vermont to sell his root planters, which are made of copper wire and colorful glass jars filled with water that hold plants. Screen shot 2010-04-24 at 1.53.10 PM

"Usually folks hang them on a curtain rod in a window and watch them grow," he said.

The aisles are full of shoppers buying the creations to spruce up their home for spring. Ed Thompson from East Aurora bought some wicker baskets including a Lazy Susan as a gift for his mother on Mother's Day.

"It's been a worthwhile trip," he said.

The show continues tomorrow from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m.

Meet three of the artisans at this year's Springtime in the Country show and see some of the unique handcrafted creations shoppers are taking home.
