Torrid Tori
Anyone out there catch Tori Amos' performance on Letterman Thursday night?
The song - "Big Wheel," from her just-released "American Doll Posse" album - was offbeat and pretty brilliant. Tori's appearance was a bit of a shock, however. Clearly, she's playing a character, which explains what sure looked like a wig, and a freakish one at that. But something about the whole affair was just plain strange.
What gives? Does anyone have any particular insight into just what Amos is up to with this bit of theater-rock? Guess I'll spend some time digesting the albums this weekend. I'd love to know what anyone out there thinks of it.

I think she her new album is a "concept" of sorts where she portrays 5 different characters. The song on letterman was probably the one for the character she dressed up as.

maybe she is trying desperately to remain relevant, thus awkward wig, amidst a genre that is out of touch with her style...i didn't see it...i am surprised to learn of her appearance on letterman...

Tori has always used fantasy and stories, and the element of fictional over-the-top drama seems to increase with every album. She performed "A Sorta Fairytale" (appropriate song title for this discussion!) on Letterman when that record came out, and she had a multi-colored flowing dress-thing on like a fairy princess or something. Even her name is a fabrication (Ellen is her real name, right?). Her book with Ann Powers gives us some idea about what she's up to and why, but, she's just so oddly creative....and, her live show is a jaw dropper, though. Hopefully she'll come to our neck of the woods soon.
