Live Earth, strange weather

Last weekend, millions watched as hundreds of acts played stages in seven countries over the course of 24 hours, most of which were broadcast on television worldwide. The event, dubbed "Live Earth," and centered around the ideas presented in Al Gore's book and film "An Invonvenient Truith," was intended to raise consciousness concerning global warming and its attendent consequences. The idea behind the concert seems to have been to suggest that care for the planet is something that transcends political, ideological and geographical strictures - as in, everyone lives here, everyone scurries about beneath the same sun and ozone layer, and everyone's children will inherit whatever mess (or not) we leave behind.

As broad as the philosophy was, and as non-threatening its "agenda' - suggestions throughout the 24 hour concert presentation included such radical leftist alarmist directives as turning off lights, car-pooling, buying hybrid cars, and using more eco-friendly lightbulbs - many have come forth with criticism for the event. Among them, the Competetive Enterprise Institute, which sent out a press release labaling the whole affair as part of Gore's "scare them green agenda."

"The information being disseminated at the various concert venues should be considered highly suspect," the Institute's press release continued. Mmm hmmm. Check this screed out at www.CEI.org. Then visit www.LiveEarth.org and make up your own mind. You can also watche exceprts from the concert - which was pretty darned amazing, even if you still believe the world is flat - at that site.

Naysayers like the Competetive Enterprise Institute - which is essentially an aplogist organization covering the tracks of unregulated free enterprise - might be disappointed to learn that, on MSN alone, more than 10 million viewers tuned in to Live Earth.
