A federal investigation plagued former Niagara Falls Mayor Vince V. Anello during his final years in office.
The probe hung like a dark cloud over the city after officials were interviewed and documents were subpoenaed in 2005.
Now, five months after Anello left office, two new federal subpoenas issued last week paint a picture of information investigators have sought.
Hundreds of pages of documents that center largely around how city leaders decided to lease or sell two key downtown properties must be returned to a federal grand jury. Council meeting minutes, audited financial statements and two oaths of office taken by Anello were also requested. Read the story here.
No indictments have been handed up, and Anello and his attorney say he committed no crime.
When interviewed last week, Anello said he had "served the people of the City of Niagara Falls honestly and faithfully." He has since declined to comment on the subpoenas.
Last week, Anello also questioned how long his name would continue to be connected to a federal probe.
"How long is an American supposed to be held dangling by the government?" Anello asked. "How's that fair to anybody?"
