Green business strategies
Bill Nowak and the folks at the Green Gold Development Corp. are launching a monthly series that has the potential to help businesses go green. It's called "Business Gets Green" and here is how Nowak describes the effort:
"Business Gets Green will be held on the 3rd Thursday of each month at the Buffalo Museum of Science. Sessions will include an opening half hour where the first 20 businesses to register each get a quick minute to introduce themselves and what they do, followed by lively 15 minute presentations by 2 businesses, a local environmental organization, and a public official. The sessions will last no more than 2 hours and will close with the presenters fielding questions. If you want to become part of this emerging sector of our economy, want to network with other businesspeople who are "getting green", or are curious about how you might fit in, Business Gets Green is the place for you."
The first session is set for May 15 at 5:30 p.m. with the following lineup:
- Michael Gainer, Executive Director, Buffalo ReUse Inc.
- Julie Barrett O'Neill, Buffalo/Niagara Riverkeeper.
- Earl Aragona, Vice President, Ecology & Environment, Inc.
- Brian Reilly, the city's chief economic development officer.
If you want to introduce your business at the start of the session, register with Nowak at bill.nowak2@verizon.net .
Gainer and Buffalo ReUse, by the way, have been selected as one of 20 finalists for the Sustainable Cities award sponsored by The Financial Times and the Urban Land Institute. Buffalo Reuse deconstructs houses as an alternative to demolitions. This is an international award, so making the top 20 is a pretty nice honor of and by itself.
"It is a great honor to be a finalist for this international award, and I hope that it brings greater attention to the potential for waste diversion, job creation, young adult training and mentoring, community building, and blight reduction made possible through deconstruction," Gainer said in a press release.
The New York Times Magazine in May did a short profile of Gainer in a piece on social entrepreneurs.
