Speculation that envisions Hoyt stepping up if ...

CityHallNews.com, which focuses on state and New York City politics, has published this chart showing scenarios if any one of 11 potential candidates to succeed Hillary Clinton gets appointed by Gov. Paterson.

Two scenarios have Western New York angles.

If the event Brian Higgins gets the appointment, Sam Hoyt is seen getting Higgins' Congressional seat.

In the event Byron Brown is our next senator, Hoyt is seen as succeeding Brown as mayor. (I hope Steve Piegon is sitting down as he reads this).

Brown's appointment is regarded by most as a prohibitive long shot, Higgins' less so, as he's usually one of three or four names mentioned as the most likely appointees.

Of course, who knows if Hillary is offered, or accepts, a post with the Obama administration.

Hoyt supporter will say he brought home the bacon for pretty parks and the like. In 16 years he has not taken the lead on the core issue which is jobs. Brian Higgins as a Senator would be an excellent choice, hopefully we would get a new face to fill the vacancy. New faces=new ideas that we need so badly. We do not need party bosses tapping the old boys network. Mr. Higgins is at least willing to ask the questions regarding business as usual.

I can't imagine that empty suit representing us in the Senate. It was bad enough with the empty pant suit but really?

WNYMind

I think this is the point where people usually talk about monkeys flying out of their butts.

I am 100% sure that the person to replace Clinton will come from downstate. Sam Hoyt would be a disaster. No need to go into his scandals or rumors about him. Brown is a floundering Mayor of the poorest city in the state and oversees an administration that is out of compliance with the city charter (i.e. who is the director of OSP?). Higgins is a one trick pony, who is fixated on the skyway and mullets.

The next senator, governor, etc... will come from downstate.

Earth to James

Byron Brown in the U.S. senate????

James, seriously, you're losing credibility by even posting about that.

There's less than 5% chance that Paterson would even choose anyone from Upstate. But BB??? That's crazy talk.

Simple Country Lawyer

True, our lackluster carpetbagging mayor, Byron Blowhard Brown is drooling profusely over the Senate Seat. Can you imagine him trying to deliver a speech on the floor of the Senate: "CLEARLY and SADLY four score and seven years ago our...BLAH BLAH".
PLEASE GOD SAVE US. It would be great to get rid of the Blowhard. My choice would be Sam Hoyt, he is classy, talented, and would do great things for Buffalo. Higgins is an Irish sissy, more interested in Ireland than Buffalo, more interested in French cut suits, dopey foppish haircuts and posing and tooting his own horn. Barb Kavanaugh would be great for the Pigeon-Golisano-Gay faction, but not for Buffalo. She would be able to do great things for her female U.S. Attorney-wife, but not for Buffalo. Who else is there?? Gene Fahey would make a fabulous Senator, but alas, I think he's superglued to the bench. It's very restful there.

Camino Reality

The question that bothers me the most about Mayor Byron Brown becoming a U.S. Senetor is this.

Would Brown stand up like Obama did and vote against wars like Iraq II? I see Brown more as a play safe politician who won't be as critical in his voting as a Senator.

I believe that Higgins would do a great job and would be representative of the Upstate/Buffalo interest. Also Sam Hoyt would bring a real progressive voice to Congress. Let's hope this actually happens!!! A win win for Upstate/Buffalo!

In the 26th

I have to agree that I still think it is highly unlikely that Higgins will get the Senate appointment...BUT if He does to speculate that Hoyt would be able to get elected to the seat in the 26th is ludicrous. Furthermore any discussion about a possible replacement for Higgins should certainly include EC Clerk Kathy Hochul, who has was exploring a run for that seat before Higgins won it, as well as toying with the idea of running oin the 27th.

Earth to Upstate - You're not important

There's just no way it will be Higgins or anyone from WNY appointed to the Senate. For what possible reason would Gov. Paterson take that kind of risk?

Jason

We need Byron Brown to be appointed US Senator... it would remove him as mayor and open up the position for someone that actually wants perform the tasks of a Mayor rather than just imitate one. It would remove his eminence, the high exalted first deputy mayor deluxe Steve Kasey from City Hall.

Byron would be sure to lose the Senate seat in a dem primary in 2010 and would then be out of elective politics.

OHnos

God, Hoyt rewarded for 16 years of doing nothing. Grrrrroan.
