Tolbert still making the mayoral rounds

By Robert J. McCarthy

Bernie Tolbert, the potential primary challenger to Democratic incumbent in this year's mayoral election, is proving adept at one aspect of politics - testing the waters.

Tolbert, the former head of the FBI's Buffalo office, said Monday he remains interested in running this year, but has made no decision and continues to make the rounds throughout Buffalo to listen and learn.

"I've been out there, and continue to talk to people," he said. "I'm getting a lot of encouragement, and I'm just trying to do all the right things."

Indeed, Tolbert continues to show up all over town. Several sources say he visits black churches on Sundays (traditional campaign stops in the African-American community), and he was spied at last week's state legislative hearing on the new gun control in the Mahoney State Office Building.

"I'm still out there making sure I touch every base I can," he said.
