Democrat Schroeder crosses party lines for Lorigo

   By Robert J. McCarthy

Chalk this political endorsement very much in the official "eyebrow raising" category.

Buffalo Comptroller Mark J.F. Schroeder -- a Democrat -- is endorsing Conservative Joseph Lorigo to the County Legislature.

"He understands families are struggling and we need to do more to help small businesses create jobs," Schroeder said. "I've been very impressed by his work ethic and the stances he has taken on behalf of taxpayers."

Schroeder, who has on occasion earned a political "maverick" reputation, has long been close to the Erie County Conservative Party, to which Lorigo belongs and which is headed by Ralph C. Lorigo, the legislator's father.

Lorigo, who caucuses with Republicans in County Hall, is facing Democrat Lauren M. Gray on Nov. 5.
