In a sign of a potential internal struggle to come involving the local GOP, a dozen Republican leaders late Wednesday announced their support for the re-election of Republican Mark J. Grisanti to the State Senate.
While the list does not feature super-star names in the Erie County Republican Party, it contains a number of significant officials who are signaling support for Grisanti in the face of what appears to be tepid backing at most in other sectors of the party.
Those announcing support for Grisanti Wednesday are led by Hamburg Supervisor Steve Walters, Evans Supervisor Keith Dash, Brant Supervisor Len Pero, Orchard Park Town Board Member Eugene Majchrzak, Orchard Park Town Board Member Michael Sherry, Orchard Park Highway Superintendent Frederick Piasecki, and Orchard Park Village Trustee Joe Wales.
Also endorsing Grisanti are City of Tonawanda Councilmember Jay Hall; Hal Fabinsky, chairman of the Orchard Park GOP; Chis Pilozzi, chairman of the City of Tonawanda GOP; Joseph Totaro, chairman in Buffalo's North District, and Sandra Waugaman-Beck, GOP chairwoman in Buffalo's Ellicott District.
Attorney Kevin T. Stocker is already campaigning against Grisanti for a potential GOP primary, and County Legislator Kevin R. Hardwick is also eyeing a primary challenge.
