Morning Links: Roman Polanski awaiting extradition to U.S. in 30-year-old rape case

Director Roman Polanski was on his way to receive a lifetime achievement award from the Zurich Film Festival, but he got arrested instead when his plane landed in Switzerland. Polanski, 76, who fled the United States in 1978 after he pleaded guilty to having sex with a 13-year-old girl, is being held on a U.S. warrant in the case, Swiss police say a decision to extradite him to the U.S. is subject to judicial procedure. A friend of Polanski told People that he has visited Switzerland before without any problem, and asked, "Why now?" The Los Angeles Times is reporting that U.S. officials came close to nabbing Polanski "half a dozen times or so" in the past two decades, and he canceled travel plans twice after arrest and extradition papers were prepared.
