Willy Wonka Meets American Idol

Airport Plaza Jewelers -- yes, the crazy guy in the kiosk on all those commercials -- gobbled up some more TV time early this morning when it launched "The Kiosk Presents: People Inc. and the Chocolate Sale."

The new half-hour of paid-programming -- airing at 7 a.m. Sunday through Friday on WNYO-Channel 49 -- will promote a fund-raising Easter candy sale event for four straight weeks. After Easter Sunday (April 24), the program's title will change to "The Kiosk Presents: Buffalo's Best Buys" and continue to run through June 26th, with the possibility of becoming an ongoing series.

The show, produced by Airport Plaza Jewelers and its marketing division -- Leg Up Marketing -- will be hosted by owner Don Hoffman, who said that for a minimum $20 donation people will each have 30 seconds to show off their special talent, skit or original song. The show will feature interviews that showcase Buffalo-area businesses and the human services agency People Inc. Hoffman posted two rules: Keep it clean and have fun.

All of the donations will benefit People Inc., the agency that last year received  a $25,000 donation from Hoffman.

"He'll be on at 7 a.m. six days a week Sunday through Friday," confirmed Nick Magnini, WNYO general manager. "It's 100-percent paid programming, no different than if Glen Campbell Chevrolet wanted to do a half-hour on cars. We would sell it to them."

"He's going to do what he wants to do with it," said Magnini. "It's no different than if I got a call from Ginsu knives. He's a good client and he wanted to do some half-hour shows so we sold it to him. He's on for 13 weeks, but it could be longer."
