Quarterfinal trip to Jamestown is worth it
JAMESTOWN -- Last year I tried seeing as many Section VI boys basketball quarterfinals as I could in one day. This year, there was only one doubleheader, which would have made it very tough to get around to several games. Meanwhile, there were a handful of high-quality games worth taking in. So this year we picked one for me to go to and report on. We picked a good one.
Carlos Rivera missed the first free throw with 4.4 seconds left, but made the second to give Jamestown a 62-61 victory over visiting Riverside.
Rivera went to the line on a foul call which was certainly worth questioning. From where I was sitting (midcourt near the scorer's table), it appeared the Riverside defender had his hand on the ball and not enough body to warrant a call, especially a game-deciding one in the playoffs.
However, Riverside shouldn't blame its loss on the call, nor did it. Coach Ron Killinger disagreed with the foul, but rightly said that his team shouldn't have allowed itself to be put in that position. The Frontiers had a five-point lead in the late moments but turned the ball over twice.
This game is also sure to raise the issue of Section VI's seeding system, which is debated nearly every year.
Riverside was ranked among the top 10 large schools all season long but its power points rating was hurt because it is the only Class AA team in the Yale Cup; that made it a No. 5 seed and gave it one of the toughest road trips -- if not the toughest -- in Section VI. Jamestown, the No. 4 seed, has an outstanding student section of "Raider Rowdies" (they also go by the moniker "Event Staff" for the white t-shirts they wear), plus, the Red Raiders have been on a nice uptick to end the season -- they knocked off both Frontier and Williamsville North at home.
I'd like to see the seeding system tweaked, but that's a whole other blog. Having the seedings out of human hands is a good thing, to avoid controversy. With things somehow having to be based on school sizes, I'm not sure if Riverside's situation would be much better if a different system was in place -- being the only AA school in a large league like the Yale Cup will provide difficulties no matter what.
Here's a look at the results and box scores from Friday night's action.
Can't say I'm surprised to see Sweet Home win when the lights are brightest. ... How about the postseason run for Hutch-Tech? ... Some impressive wins by the A-2 final four: Depew, Lafayette, Lackawanna and East. ... Akron goes OT to beat Alden in its third shot at them this year. ... Didn't somebody write that Gowanda was a sleeper? ... And a nice win for Frewsburg.
Check out Saturday's Buffalo News for more on the Jamestown-Riverside game as well as all the key quarterfinals. And there will be plenty more to come here.
---Keith McShea

Keith, ....I hope any criticism that I brought on, will be looked at as constructive criticism...I am a very opinionated person, and I just might have to seek professional help to deal with it...I look at myself as a genuine nice guy and you seem alright too...So have fun at all of the games in the next few days and I promise not leave anymore messages, unless somebody makes stupid comments...So, watch what you say!!!

Gator please just drop this subject, cause your starting to make us Southern-Tier Fan's look like the neglected step child of section 6. I know as well as anyone coming from Jamestown and living in Buffalo for over 10 years, that the Buffalo News Definently over represents the Catholic Schools compared to the public schools and the rest of section 6. Though their is nothing we can do about this subject because it seems like this is the way it is and will most likely be for a while. Us Southern-Tier and public school fans need to appreciate what coverage we get from the Buffalo News, because it is the BUFFALO news not the WNY news. Though I remember as playing high school football, the Buffalo News and other TV media outlets almost always made it to our regulat season and playoff games, but that also may have been because we were the New York State Large School of the 90's in football too.

hahahahaha, Keith, your too funny

I've been voting for both Randolph and Maple Grove in the top five of the small school poll all year long, I've been hyping the C-2 final just as long (with all of my hoops heart!), and from the tell-me-something-I-don't-know-dept., I've been writing about how good Chris Secky is since he was in eighth grade. But I suppose there's no convincing Gator, who is putting up more airballs than my Tuesday night pickup game. Baddump-bump.

Keith,
I don't think I can do the job. I do know a few qualified individuals that might try. Heck, I'd be clicking spell check more often than striking keys..Have a safe trip down to Jamestown and hopefully no controversial calls...that won't matter to you though Keith, I doubt your heart is with neither Randolph nor Maple Grove...Chris Secky is the real deal...Great Sophmore..Randolph has a couple of studs also. Could be a great game. If I get the chance, I'll introduce myself to you.
Posted by: Gator | February 28, 2008 at 11:54 AM
Of course I'll be at the JCC games tomorrow; I've been there with a photographer (just so we can get shots of all the controversial foul calls. hahaha) every year since they moved the games down there.
We went to Riverside-Jamestown because we thought it was the best matchup and would be the best game. The answer to your conspiracy-theory fueled hypothetical? We'd cover the game we thought was the best matchup, which could very well have been Frontier-Jamestown.
And enough with the eyesight and the homer stuff already. For the umpteenth time, all I said is that I thought it was questionable, and I would have said the same thing if it went the other way. And I would have said the same thing if -- and this is a big if -- the call was made in a Buffalo gym in front of a Buffalo crowd that was just as loud as the great Jamestown crowd.
And photo, schmoto. The shot got cleanly blocked without the driving player getting knocked off balance and I thought it was a let-'em-play deal, especially in the final seconds. Again, I certainly could be wrong. Someone please let me know when the video gets on youtube. :-)
And whoa: Gator, are you applying to be a stringer?
If you are, or if anyone else is interested, seriously: Send a resume, cover letter and sample non-homer writing clips to Sports Editor Steve Jones, Buffalo News Sports Department, One News Plaza, P.O. Box 100, Buffalo NY 14240.

I would almost guarantee Keith McShea is at the Maple Grove / Randolph game. What else would he be covering tomorrow night?
Posted by: centercourt | February 28, 2008 at 09:46 AM
Mr.McShea,
That's great that the "News" sent a reporter down for the Riverside-Jamestown game... My question is, if it was Jamestown playing, some team like Frontier, would the crew have been sent?....You already know the answer to that, right? Will you be at the Maple Grove-Randolph game Friday night?
I realize being 75 miles away, logistics don't enable you to attend as many sporting events in Chaut-Catt area as you can in Buffalo area. Maybe what the "News" needs is a reporter from the "Southern Tier" to cover local sporting events. I am serious, I know many people and one in particular, comes to mind. He's a bright professional man, that follows high school sports.
I do have to commend the "News" on the pre-season high school football inserts. They were top-notch.
Back to the main topic. Mr.McShea, I am real confident that if it was Riverside driving to the bucket for a win, and Jamestown went up for the block and was called for the foul,in the exact same circumstance, you would have, without a doubt, supported the referees decision, that a blatant foul occurred. Thats the definition of a "Homer". look at the photo again and just admit that it was the proper call....
I can see you in the stands, scibbling. I just can't figure out how your view was better than the camera mans... Your eyesight must be FANtastic. I wish you well and want no hard feelings. Isn't it great that high school sports can still bring out the passion in some people?
Good luck to all of the Section 6 athletes in every sport...

Gator, if you want to take that kind of tone you're taking in your posts and drag the blog down a little bit, that's up to you.
Disagreements and debates and discussions are what can make this blog -- and any blog -- great to be a part of. We can certainly agree to disagree about a foul call at the end of a game. (Were you even at the game?).
But when you start painting this picture that The News, or this blog, or this reporter, is biased, that's when things start to stray.
You did it during the All-WNY football series, and you're doing it again now, and you're dead wrong.
If I, and The News, were so biased against the Southern Tier, would I be voting for Olean, Randolph, Maple Grove every week in my poll? Or for Jamestown this week? Or would we do an entire separate cover of our high school football preview solely for the Southern Tier featuring athletes from Falconer, Maple Grove and Southwestern? Or give the Class C and D teams in our football preview the same treatment the AA & A teams got? Or would there be significant representation in the All-WNY boys basketball team -- and I'm talking the top 20 -- from Jamestown, Olean, Falconer and Franklinville, and that's just in the last two years? Would the outstanding Jamestown girls team get plenty of atttention in our section? Would we cover every football or boys basketball team in the state final four, no matter where they come from? Or hey, how about this! Out of 32 quarterfininal games, The Buffalo News -- reporter and photographer -- made the trip to Jamestown!
The answer is no, of course we're not biased against the Southern Tier. We cover all of Western New York - from Clymer to Lew-Port to Albion to Portville -- and we try to be as inclusive and as balanced as possible, and to give coverage to those who deserve it.
So let's keep the chatter on here about the facts and figures related to what are mostly enjoyable discussions, instead of small-minded claims of bias and inane conspiracy theories. Thanks.

Considering the fact that JHS is subject to racist chants nearly every time they go on the road, I don't think their fans do it. At Will North, we had fans make fun of a kid with a hearing disability. At Orchard Park the last two years, the Jamestown team has heard chants of U-S-A, Mow my lawn and other deragatory comments at black players mistaken for Mexicans. Additionally, two teachers were standing right there. So, if the N-word was said, they would have been removed immediately. Expect the Event Staff to be out in force tomorrow

Ginn, I can guarantee you that the things you are accusing Jamestown fans of,never happened. Looks to me like you have been caught fabricating a story and now you want to drop it. Either you lied or you believed a totally absurd story, and repeated it. it's one or the other and both are shameful...Ginn, you really owe Jamestown fans an apology. If you didn't make this story up, then you are a real fool for believing someone else's story, and putting it in print. I am not so sure you are an adult!

This is just to The wnyhoops, you have your views and i have mind, i just want to let you know that we are the adults here and i am not going to argue your point of veiw and end this comment now. The game is over................Ginn

Just relax and let the logic come to you. It's called the BUFFALO news, they're not supposed to do anything, but they do lend coverage to all. The question about the Post Journal covering Catholic schools was sarcastic and went over your head. I know what your point was, and I disagree with it.
The newpaper shows no bias. If you find opinions or coverage that favors a team on the blog, then consider what a blog is. My point, again, is to be happy with what coverage you get in the Buffalo News. I'm not saying that the editors should show a bias to Buffalo area teams, only that Buffalo area teams will always receive the most coverage, and should.
If you read the article in the paper about the Jamestown game, Keith gives no opinion about the foul, only quotes the coach. He only gives an opinion on the blog. Again, remember the point of a blog, you're taking full advantage of it. If you want an example of bias, look at the way the tier coaches in the small school poll vote.
Posted by: centercourt | February 27, 2008 at 11:33 AM
center-court,
The "Jamestown Post journal" covers the Chautauqua-Cattaragus area, not the Buffalo area so why would they cover the "Catholic" schools ?.. Totally illogical on your part...The "Buffalo News" is supposed to cover all of WNY...By your reasoning, because the news sells more newspapers in the Buffalo area, the sports editors are supposed to show a bias towards Buffalo area schools? Get real..My problem isn't the Buffalo area fans chiming in and making their point, its the editors showing favoritism...Next time, try coming up with a better point, because your last one is laughable. I have to commend Mr.Ames again, one heck of a photo!
Posted by: Gator | February 27, 2008 at 10:51 AM
Gator - I'll second the lighten up. If not for Keith taking the time to run this blog, we wouldn't have one. He works for the Buffalo News, not Section 6. The leagues you claim he's a homer of, are the leagues that most appeal to the mass of Buffalo News readers. How much does the Jamestown paper cover the Catholic league? The News is the only paper that even attempts to include coverage of all teams in WNY. So instead of going on the attack, be happy there is at least one source that encompasses everything.
Posted by: centercourt | February 27, 2008 at 10:36 AM
Lighten up? Someone has to tell him...He is supposed to represent all of us in Western New York..Most Southern Tier sports fans have always known there is an unfair attitude by "The News" covering high school sports in WNY...I guess, I am just opinionated enough, to speak my thoughts. That photo that Mr. Ames submitted, shows that there was clear contact, but I guess, it's still not enough evidence and Riverside got screwed,right?...I live in the Southern Tier, and I love high school sports...I wish all WNY teams to do well...I realistically can't see anyone beating Niagara Falls...But, for some reason if Jamestown beat them on a bad call,I would be the first person to complain about it and cry foul, or no foul...Every year, I root for all section 6 winners to win State Championships, whether it's football, basketball, baseball or especially wrestling, which is my true love, along with Jessica Alba, regardless if they are from Buffalo or the Jamestown area..I guess you can call me a "Homer" also, the difference is my home is considered WNY, not a certain County, or city!
Posted by: Gator | February 27, 2008 at 10:16 AM
Gator, lighten up man! I've been saying all year I'd love to hear much more from our friends in the souther tier. Regrettably those of us here in the city and its' immediate environs don't have the pleasure of seeing tier teams. Other than you, Tom and Olean_Fan, I don't remember much posting from anyone from the southern tier.
Since the beginning of basketball people have been disputing calls of the officials. Fact of the matter Jamestown has nothing to apologize for, they won fair and square and are moving on while Riverside laments letting one get away and not doing the things necessary to seal the victory. Check out Coach Killinger's comments for an excellent example of everything that is great about this sport. He sets a shining example for all to follow.
Good luck!!
Posted by: hoopster | February 27, 2008 at 08:53 AM
Mr. McShea, Your comments make me laugh..That's laugh at you, not with you...I guess it doesn't matter if it's football or basketball, your true color comes out very, very vibrant....Your first choice are the Catholic schools, second choice are any Buffalo based schools...The Southern tier ranks at the very bottom on your list...To run a site like this, I think the editor should be unbiased...You are a true "Homer"....I think this site and The Buffalo News should represent all of WNY, including the "Country Bumpkins" in the Southern Tier...
Posted by: Gator | February 27, 2008 at 08:39 AM
I stand by the post and the comment I've already made on here. All I said it was the call, especially in the final seconds of a playoff game, was questionable. All I know is that from my vantage point (I'm the schmo scribbling on a notebook in the bleachers near midcourt in the background of the photo), Rivera is leaping towards the basket, the defender seemed to be going straight up, and the ball gets cleanly blocked by the defender's right hand a millisecond or two after the photo was taken. I'm not sure the photo makes it an unquestionable foul. Then again, I certainly could be wrong.
And I'm as much a fan of Riverside as I am of Jamestown or as I am of high school basketball. I'm also a huge fan of games being decided on the floor, instead of at the line. Especially when it's not a, umm ... slam dunk of a foul.
Posted by: Keith McShea | February 27, 2008 at 01:44 AM
Interesting point Tom. Looked at the photo again and I can see where you might suggest contact by the defender's left arm. remember the definition of a foul though. It's a foul when the offending player either creates an advantage for himself or puts his opponent at a disadvantage by the contact. I wasn't there so I'm just going on your photo and I can't truly say. I would reiterate though that a ref shouldn't call a foul at the end of a game when the outcome of the game is on the line unless there is absolutely no doubt an advantage or disadvantage has been created.
Posted by: hoopster | February 26, 2008 at 05:25 PM
Dear Hoopster,
Your comments make for interesting reading, but I'm pretty sure you can't make contact with a shooters arm -verticle or not.
Posted by: Tom Ames | February 26, 2008 at 05:14 PM
Interesting photo, but as far as I'm concerned it doesn't prove anything. It shows a snap shot in time not the entire play. And what it shows is a defender who is vertical and not coming down on the Jamestown player. Remember the principle of verticality?? In case you don't it means the defender has the right to his space from the floor to the ceiling so long as he remains vertical. And the defender can remain stationary and try and draw the charge or jump straight up and attempt to block the shot. This is one of the most missed calls in basketball. You have a defender who has perfectly legal guarding position and an offensive player who is driving towards the hoop, leaves his feet and then proceeds horizontally through the air towards the hoop while the defender goes straight up and the contact ensues because the offensive player is going horizontally and not vertically. Nine times out of ten the ref will call a foul on the defender and he is wrong all nine times under this scenario.
I wasn't at the game and can't really tell what exactly happened, but if anything it looks like the situation I described above. If so the ref blew it. If the defender violated the verticality principle then a foul call may have been justified. However hard to justify a foul at the end of the game unless it's clear an advantage or disadvantage was created by the contact.
Posted by: hoopster | February 26, 2008 at 05:05 PM
Wow Mr.Ames,Great photo..It clearly shows a foul...Jamestown seems to have a great coach that gets the team prepared for BIG games...Good luck Red Raiders, and all of the other section 6 teams that remain alive....
Posted by: Gator | February 26, 2008 at 04:27 PM
I know it was a devastating loss to Jamestown, but Riverside fans, including Keith McShea, shouldn't attempt to blame it on a foul call.
In fact, if you click on the link below, you can see both the hack and the body foul for yourself.

This is a rediculous statement from Ginn as I was at this game sitting by the Student Section and never heard nor saw any of these actions take place. Jamestown High School and it's Basketbal team are a very racially diverse group of people, and I can assure you that no student or fan would ever call the other teams players a derogatory term or "spit" on them. Jamestown's fans have been ridiculed for years by Buffalo area teams for the raucous environment and their non-stop cheering throughout a game, and have had teachers monitor their activities and stand with them throughout the games to please the other team's coaches. If anything any time Jamestown's fans travel with the team to away or playoff games they are often threatened and attacked by other teams fans and administrators for their passionate cheering.
Posted by: wnyhoops | February 25, 2008 at 06:03 PM
I would like to comment on that Jamestown vs Riverside game on Friday night,as a concerned parent, that the spectators at Jamestown were calling the Riverside team the big N word and other derogatory names that I don't care to say,and definitely that could have been a factor on there playing. This is High School basketball not pro basketball, the majority of the spectators are students, and they should have been instructed that Jamestown High School would not tolerated such behavior and after Riverside was leaving they also spit at them, why would that be allowed to happen especially when Jamestown had all ready won, I don't see the news media making that call, the foul call controversy for Jamestown victory was not the only call that made them win.

Coach Killinger, you are one class act! Good luck to you and your boys! We'll look forward to an amazing run next year in the As.

someone told me of this website last night. i am the riverside coach and to those of you who saw our game and the call there is nothing that can be done. as i told keith mcshea we should not have gotten ourselves into that position. we had a 10 pt lead. and my team knew that we had to take care of business because we knew that we were not going to get a call if the game was close. i am more disturbed with the section 6 official
Posted by: ron killinger | February 23, 2008 at 05:32 PM
As alluded to a few weeks ago...All Section 6 needs to is to take a team's points earned and divide by maximum that's attainable. They then get a percentage and seed accordingly.
Would it change results? I don't know, but it would change venues !!

Keith - I agree with mentioning what's absolutely necessary. That was why I used the example of the Jamestown coach even admittimng it was questionable.
Posted by: centercourt | February 23, 2008 at 03:36 PM
I'm not crazy about reporting on questionable foul calls either, which I hardly ever do. Sure, they might be too common, but this one came with 4.4 seconds left in a playoff game and ultimately decided the who was going to Buffalo State. The only time foul calls are even written about is playoff time, and only if absolutely necessary. The referees get enough grief. I'm not taking anything away from Jamestown. The win is legit -- that's been covered by me here (and the Riverside coach in the story): Riverside turned the ball over, Jamestown hit its shots, Rivera hit his free throw and then stole the inbounds. I'm not doing anything but simply reporting on what happened at the game. And what happened is that there was a questionable call with 4.4 seconds left.
Posted by: Keith McShea | February 23, 2008 at 02:42 PM
Champ's right, time to be accountable North fan. The Regional AA game will probably be one of the best we see this year.
TML - I would agree that Wilson needs everyone to beat CH, but still good year for them & N-O in general to send all three poll teams to semis.
Posted by: centercourt | February 23, 2008 at 01:13 PM
I don't think Wilson will fare very well against the Honors/Seneca winner without a starter or two.
Posted by: TML1000 | February 23, 2008 at 12:55 PM
CC-
I told you, funny things happen when your that close to the Penn border. I'm too surprised by this upset. I think Niagara Falls will roll through the rest of AA and can't wait for their Regional matchup with either Rush Henrietta or East High.
Also, for all those Williamsville supporters who said that their teams deserved more respect in the polls. Not one of the three Williamsville schools will be represented at Buffalo State. That is why they get no respect. They haven't produced in the playoffs since the Konst era.

Thoughts on last night
It sounds Jamestown was the place to be last night. I thought Riverside would advance, but once again, the Res Raiders find a way into the semis. Not crazy about reporting on a questionable foul call. I think they are common to many games. The one I was at was full of them. Maybe it's worth reporting if the Jamestown coach is talking about how his team should have been called for a foul. But the way it's presented casts the shadow of doubt as to the legitimacy of the win, even though it gets covered up with a - that's not the reason we lost.
NFHS 103, OP 50. Who wants to play the Falls right about now? Sweet Home gets to first, and I don't think it will matter what Schintz does to prepare his team. Not only do the Wolverines want to avenge last year, but they are just at another level than the rest of AA. If Frontier struggles against the press, then NFHS will tear them up. The Falcons have had a height advantage against everyone all season, one they would not have on the Falls. Jamestown already lost to the Falls by 30.
Depew had a convincing third win over Maryvale, but will need the kind of effort they used against Lafayette last year to get past Lackawanna. East going in to Cheektowaga and holding them to 28 points tells me they may be peaking at the right time.
TML - Something to consider when grading Wilson's win over Roy-Hart - it was done without two starters. One is out for the rest of the season. Not sure if the other plays on Monday, but I think they beat Gowanda regardless.
Posted by: centercourt | February 23, 2008 at 12:30 PM
Playoff time means defense which trumps offense nearly every time. Who are the best defensive teams/players in these playoffs? I didn't see the Jamestown-Riverside game or the Will North-Sweet home game but those are some pretty low totals for some strong offensive teams. Coach Killinger was classy enough (and perceptive enough) not to blame that one bad call; he knows that they had their chances and JHS came up with some big stops during tight-collar time. And speaking of good D and tight collars, Will North had a seven point lead at the end of three quarters in a low scoring game? I would like to see all the stats for that game.

You know what is absolute non-sense? They way that the seeds come out. The Yale Cup is by far the hardest league in the area. To me it dosen't matter what class a team is any team can win any night and because of how it works city teams get punished. No way should Rivedrside had to have traveled. Hutch-Tech is showning right now where the city is at. They are going to Buff St. and they were probably the thrid worst team in the Yale Cup. I hope that something can be done at some point but it probably wont beacuse nobody around WNY is really intrested in high school sports.

TML 1000:
I agree with your comments on pressuring the Frontier squad....had trouble w/KW press, but their strong first 1/2 with good frontcourt sets made the hole too deep for KW. They have nice balance and their big men are athletic (would love to see them play Falls). If Frontier gets some kind of bond issue they could use some new bulbs...I thought I was entering Area 51 !!
Posted by: AA BR MSTR | February 23, 2008 at 07:15 AM
One more note on Frontier...I was actually more impressed with their guards than their big men. The big boys really didn't show me much in terms of great post play. Seeing that West only has one player over 6'2, they were obviously out-rebounded severly, but they exposed Frontier's lack of mobility when they have 2 or all 3 of the big men on the court, especially with the trap. West did not shoot the ball as they are capable, thus not being able to close the gap, because they could not get any 2nd chance looks. The Frontier guard play was good, but they will still have to play better to beat Jamestown.
Posted by: TML1000 | February 23, 2008 at 12:08 AM
I went to the Frontier/KW game. The Falcons broke it open in the 2nd quarter with some nice transition. West pressed them in the 2nd half and forced many turnovers, but not enough to come back...they could never get it to single digits. Frontier looked very vulnerable to the trap. I would expect a tight game with Jamestown, and would give the Raiders a slight edge. Also, NF will be out for blood after last year and I would think we'll have a rout on our hands.
Congrats to Hutch-Tech on two big upsets, but no way they come close to Grover...McKinley will beat a over-seeded Ken East team by 20, to set up a big A-1 final.
A-2 is as expected...regarding the Lack/EA game...EA only had 7 at half. I don't know if that was great D by the Steelers or a really poor game by EA, but Depew/Lackawanna should be a great game. I expect East to beat Lafayette by about 10...but you never know how Lafayette could come out.
Olean will waltz Monday and Saturday....in B-2 Gowanda could certainly beat Wilson who was tested big-time by 3-win Roy-Hart. A rivalry, I know, but still. The winner of Honors/Seneca will win B-2...too bad not many of us will see that one.
