Tribute to Cardinal
If you haven't already, check out Allen Wilson's great tribute to the late Joe Cardinal.
Cardinal, the former Traditional boys basketball coach, retired from teaching and coaching just as I got on the high school beat in 1999-2000. But Allen, who was on the beat when Cardinal had some of his best teams, would mention him often when we talked high school hoops.

I was fortunate enough to see Coach Cardinal and his Traditional Bulls teams in action numerous times from the mid 80's through the late 90's. I never met him, but certainly admired the talented teams that played for him. It was interesting to read Allen Wilson's article, which points out that Cardinal was not a big X's & O's coach. To me, that's very telling of the respect he earned from his players. While talent is always a large part of any winning program, so to is the ability to get others to see you as a leader and respect you as a person. This was clearly the case for Cardinal, and hopefully all those who he reached out to during his time in education and coaching will now take a moment to reflect on the gifts he provided and how they might impart those on others. One thing I can say on the coaches behalf is he had a definite presence on the sidelines, and I always saw him conduct himself with class.
