Week Six Saturday: Bring on rivalries & playoffs

We've got posts on Canisius' win over St. Francis, Jamestown's comeback at Clarence and Orchard Park's pounding of Lancaster (just check out "Recent Posts" at right).

And we've only got one week to go.

Here's some more news and notes that we couldn't fit into the the roundup in today's paper.

• • •

"We're really starting to peak here in the second half of the season," said Kenmore West coach Rich Harris after the Blue Devils moved to 4-2 with a convincing win over Lockport.

"We're playing nice on offense and defense, and we're healthy. We've got the big rivalry game this week and then we head into the playoffs and maybe we can do some damage. It looks like we're in that Orchard Park bracket again. We'd be facing them for the third time in 12 months."

• • •

Ken West's Tim Hersey wasn't the only back with five touchdowns Friday.

Eric Ippolito led the way with five scores as Fredonia won handily at Olean, 40-20. The Hillbillies outrushed the Huskies, 420-96. Fredonia seems to be just fine after its loss to Lackawanna … it went down the road to Olean and came back with a 40-20 victory.

The next game for Kenmore West is against rival Kenmore East. Mike Doherty of the Bulldogs (1-4, 1-5) stood out against Sweet Home as he ran 15 times for 70 yards, caught a touchdown pass and had a 93-yard kickoff return that was halted at the 1.

• • •

The game-winning touchdown for JFK against Wilson was made possible by quarterback Daron Lipscomb's 1-yard TD run, followed by Adam Bartoszek's two-point conversion run, which tied the game at 14-14 in the fourth quarter. Josh Klyczek, who caught the game-winning pass, had nine carries for 84 yards and added eight tackles.

• • •

Williamsville East's shutout came thanks to performances like those of Ben Khechen (10 tackles), Ryan Tideswell (five tackles, sack, fumble recovery) and Isiah Rifkin (five tackles, three sacks).

• • •

Mike Smith had 10 tackles while Matt Anderson (eight carries, 50 yards) had nine for Grover Cleveland.

• • •

Burgard got a much-needed win. Samari Chaney gain 85 yards on five carries and also had six tackles and two interceptions on defense, where William White had 13 tackles and a sack.

• • •

Cody Kelso caught two touchdown passes for St. Mary's while Alex Elwell had seven tackles and Scott Ickowski had six tackles and a sack.

• • •

Another week, another rout for Clymer (6-0). Nick Heil ran for 134 yards and three touchdowns on 14 carries while Andy Bemis had 77 rushing yards and 45 receiving in a 28-0 win over Panama.

• • •

Ryan Bialaszewski carried 23 times for 168 yards and two touchdowns for Brocton (4-2), which stopped a fourth-quarter two-point conversion run attempt by West Valley (3-3) in a 20-18 win.

Bialaszewski added 12 tackles while Derek Cook had 11 for Brocton. Ben Boburg had 222 yards on just eight carries for the Wildcats.

• • •

Nate Newton carried 25 times for 204 yards, Matt Thompson had 26 carries for 161 yards and both had a pair of touchdown runs in a 30-point first quarter as Forestville (5-1) marched past Sherman, 48-25. Ben Crane had 12 tackles, a sack and recovered a fumble. Mike Reed had 267 yards passing and three touchdowns for Sherman (0-6).

Playoff scenarios and tiebreaks! There obviously is some floating disagreement concerning A South (WSE, Cheek, Amherst) and their order. I sat down and contemplated some other tiebreaks using the same varying thoughts from the A South argument.

Class C South, the fight for 4th place. Salamanca is 2-3, Westfield, Cass Valley, Falconer are 1-4. Tiebreaks can only occur if Westfield beats Salamanca this week (If Salamanca wins, they are in and will travel to Cleve Hill), so we shall assume a Westfield win under the following scenarios.

If Cass Valley loses to All-Lime and Falconer loses to SW (both very possible) WESTFIELD wins 4th based on head to head.

If Cass Valley wins, and Falconer loses, WESTFIELD wins 4th seed based on beating both Salamanca and Cass Valley (This is the step before point differentials are used!)

If Cass Valley loses, and Falconer wins, here's the classic 3-way tie break. Falc beat West, West beat Sala, Sala beat Falc. The "common opponent" point differential would tend to favor FALCONER as 4th (Falc -22 with win over SW would improve that number)(West is -44, Sala -33)

BUT, if one uses all division games (like some are doing in A South) the numbers change. Salamanca is -21 but would lose more points, Westfield is -53 but would gain points, Falconer is -24 but will gain points. FALCONER still appears in best position unless they have a 1 point win, and Salamanca loses by 1, then SALAMANCA gets the nod.

I guess what needs to happen is that someone better clarify the term "common opponents" as it refers to tie breaks, because depending on how it is applied in A South, that same definition will affect the tie breaks in B South (Olean-Pioneer) or B North (Albion-Maryvale-Lew-Port-Tonawanda).

Another important place the definition could be applied is B South for #1-#2-#3 if EA beats Lackawanna. Under the strict "common opponents" view, Pioneer and Olean are the only 2 common opponents, and Lackawanna wins this tie break (I've got it set as 1.Lack 2. Fred 3. EA regardless of this weeks game). If a broader definition is in place, an EA win by more than 16 points could move them to 2nd (possibly 1st), and Fredonia would automatically win the division with an 8 point win over Dunkirk. If you include all division games, an EA win by 13 and Fredonia beating Dunkirk by 20 would create EA +79, Lackawanna +79, Fredonia +78!!!!

Different definitions can bring different results. Section VI better apply the tie break the same within all divisions!

Rivalries?

I don't know if there is a best, per se. For the people involved they hold different meanings. The well publicized ones are Lancaster-Depew, Albion-Medina, T-NT, and Canisius-St Joe's. Fredonia-Dunkirk might have the longevity, but in some years the results hardly make a mention in Buffalo media.

Every rivalry is the best if its one you're involved in!!!!

I suppose I'll root for Panama to pull it out for 4th seed. I believe their coach is the brother of Iroquois' coach.

Milt, Brocton beat west valley saturday and the two sit at 3-3. Brocton plays forestville and west valley plays panama. If WV wins they most likley would be in but if they lose they are done.

Whats the Best Rivarly in WNY?

Stuff still to be decided:

Class AA: nothing, all seeds for North and South are set. N-W at OP, Lockport at Lancaster are rematches from regular season.

Class A: all seeds are set. Right now, we are having a slight disagreement on seeding for 3 way tie break. Coach Maurino from WSE received word from his division chair that East is #2 seed. My interpretation of the tie breaks is different and has Cheektowaga as #2 seed. "Common opponents" has historically meant that both teams had a particular team on their schedule.

Class B: I believe only #4 seed (Olean or Pioneer) needs to be decided in South. #3 and #4 need to be decided in the North. Maryvale has tie break over Albion. If both win, Maryvale 3, Albion 4. If one wins, and other loses, winner 3rd, other 4th. If both lose, Maryvale 3, Tonawanda 4th in point differential tie break with Albion. (If the tie break system works that once a spot is filled, they start over with tie breaks, then Albion is in and Tonawanda out due to head to head) Committe meetings might have to occur!

Class C: all decided, except #4 seed in South. 1-4 Westfield plays 2-3 Salamanca. Possible, but unlikely Falconer (1-4 vs Southwestern)could force 3-way tie break. otherwise winner of West vs Sala gets 4th and trip to Cleve Hill.

Class D:

Maple Grove #1 seed. Randolph, Portville, and Frewsburg could flop depending on results of games. Clymer is #1, Forestville likely 2, West Valley is at Panama for 3rd and 4th. (I'm not sure if Brocton is totally out, possible they could win and tie either W.V. or Panama for 4th. they may have lost to both already and can't win tie break)

key games:

Albion at Medina

Lew-Port at Maryvale (only big for Tonawanda if Albion loses)

Olean at Eden (Olean wins by more than 16 they're in)

Salamanca at Westfield (Cleve Hill Bowl)

Frewsburg at Portville

West Valley at Panama (AKA the Maple Grove Sweepstakes)

Great stuff, Milt.

Playoffs. Groups of 2 games are their side of the bracket)

Class AA. Niagara-Wheatfield at OP, Jamestown at Ken West and Clarence at NT, Lockport at Lancaster

Class A. Starpoint at Iroquois, WSE at Grand Island and Amherst at Sweet Home, Will South at Cheektowaga

Class B. Still some to work out. North, Alden is #1, Depew is #2, Maryvale is likely #3, Albion #4, but Albion and Maryvale could switch. (Maryvale and Albion didn't play, and Flyers own tie break) Tonawanda has an outside chance if both Albion and Maryvale lose, as they have tie break on Albion. Maryvale is in the playoffs on all scenarios. Tonawanda will be rooting for Medina and Lew-Port.

Class B South isn't set as well, as EA could force 3 way tie break and force a points given up scenario as EA, Fredonia, and Lackawanna all have a +40 point differential. EA not only has to beat Lack, but put up some points. The score of that game could matter if EA wins. If Lack wins, #1 Lack, #2 Fredonia, #3 EA. Olean is likely #4 seed, but Pioneer could sneek in if Olean has a closer than expected game vs Eden.

Class C. (Westfield or Salamanca) at Cleve Hill, Gowanda at Silver Creek and JFK at Southwestern, Allegheny-Limestone at Akron. I've got review the tie breaks with Salamanca and westfield again to make sure, but I'm pretty sure their both alive, I think Westfield will be rooting for Falconer to lose, so a 3-way tie break does not occur.

Class D. Still some things to iron out. Maple Grove is #1 seed, Portville likely #2, but Randolph could sneak in. Frewsburg at either #3 or #4. Clymer gets #1 seed in other division.
