My first trip to Medina is for a major Niagara-Orleans and small-school matchup as Wilson takes its undefeated league record to the Mustangs' gym.
7:20ish p.m.: I walk in the gym after the long trip up here hoping I haven't missed too much action, and I see Levi Pace of Medina score the first basket of the game. I like that.
I drove up and down Mustang Drive (gotta love the street name) outside the school looking for a spot -- the parking lot is jammed. The gym is probably a little more than three-quarters full.
7:49 p.m. Medina has a 40-20 lead at halftime and Travis Bloom has hit SIX three-pointers. He just nailed his sixth from the right side and had a big smile as he trotted back up the court.
Adam Hellwig has three more threes for a total of nine for Medina in the first half. Wilson was in a zone the entire half and the Mustangs just kept shooting relatively open shots.
I'm a little bummed that it is a 20-point game at halftime and hoping that Wilson makes it a game. I tucked away the iPhone for the first half to save it for the end, and I missed Bloom going nuts from downtown. After Medina jumped to its big lead, Wilson was making a game of it, closing to withing 22-16, 25-18 and 28-20 with about two minutes left in the first half.
Then it was all Medina, led by Bloom, who hit three of his six threes in the 12-0 half-closing run in the final 1:44.
Just as an FYI, Wilson has three home games coming up after tonight. How do I know that? It's on the shirt on one of the young, knowledgeable fans ("That's four [fouls] on Pace! Yes!") sitting in front of me.
8:13 p.m. After three quarters, Wilson has shown some life and have gone man-to-man.
Medina's Pace with a couple of his 11 blocks.
Medina still leads, 49-34, so the Lakemen still have serious work to do. We've got some decent highlights. We'll see what the fourth quarter brings.
8:16 p.m. Here we go. Brennan Moxham and Ethan Baker hit threes for Wilson and prompt a Medina timeout with 7:13 left in the game, leading 49-40.
8:21 p.m. Here comes Wilson -- the Lakemen call a timeout after getting a loose ball off a scramble, now trailing, 50-44, with 5:22 left.
Baker goes strong inside to cut the lead to 50-46.
8:27 p.m. With 3:03 left in the game and Medina's Demetrius Thompson going to the line to try and finish off a three-point play, the Mustangs call a timeout with a 54-48 lead.
Nice play by Pace there to drive and dish to Thompson after reeling in a loose ball (watch him come right out of your computer screen). Wilson had just gotten the lead down to four on a nice tip-in by John Vincent, and if that possession goes the other way for the Mustangs, some major momentum goes with it.
8:30 p.m. Some nice transition baskets by Medina have earned it a decent cushion -- 58-48 with 2:12 left -- and prompt a timeout from Wilson coach Brett Sippel. The gym was the loudest it has been all night just now.
The video above features two transition baskets by Willie Jakes; it starts with a rebound, and check out how high Moxham gets up.
8:33 p.m. A layup by Tyler Truesdell brings Wilson within 59-50 and Sippel calls a timeout with 1:29 left.
8:37 p.m. After some back-and-forth misses, Moxham hits a floater to bring Wilson within 59-52 with :30 left; timeout, Wilson.
After the ball is ruled out of bounds to Medina, a little Wilson fan is outraged.
Pace with yet another block to prevent any last-ditch effort by Wilson.
8:44 p.m. We have a FINAL SCORE: Medina 62, Wilson 53.
Definitely a nice win for Medina, especially coming off the loss at Newfane. A bit disappointing that the game wasn't as competitive in the second half as it was in the first. I think it's a case of Medina having a very good night -- and a very, very good first half -- and Wilson having a bad start. Where this leaves the already-wacky small school poll? I'll tell you on Tuesday.
I'll add some videos and photos as soon as I can. Right now (8:53 p.m.) I'm taking advantage of Medina's wall outlet and typing away (and emailing photos from to myself from the phone).
9:26 p.m. Passing on the info to the office, then we'll have videos up later on.
More videos to come.
Otherwise, see you tomorrow at the Martin Luther King Basketball Classic at ECC's Flickinger Center downtown starting at 11 a.m. -- I'll have updates here if you don't make it down there for what should be a great lineup of hoops.
