The Clymer girls basketball team just keeps on knocking off top-ranked teams.
The Pirates beat John A. Coleman Catholic, 31-26, in this morning's Class D state semifinals at Hudson Valley Community College in Troy.
Coleman Catholic was the defending champion and came into the game ranked first in the state. Last week Clymer beat the state's No. 2 in Elba; in the Section VI title game it beat Pine Valley, which was ranked first in the state at that point.
Correspondent Maureen Kelly reports that Clymer sank 11 of 14 free throws in the final quarter to come back after trailing for most of the game.
A basket by Andrea Lictus with 1:25 remaining tied the game. She then hit two free throws with 58.4 seconds left. Kailyn Bentley, Jenn Rhodes and Sydney Bennink finished out the scoring by converting 1-of-2 foul shots, while Clymer held Coleman scoreless. The Pirates defense was a huge key late in the game as it forced three shot clock violations in the final quarter.
Clymer will play Harrisville, which beat Davenport, 33-29, in this morning's second semifinal.
Harrisville is the Section X champion and hails from the North Country, just north of Fort Drum. Harrisville was also considered an underdog, being ranked fourth in the state entering this week while Davenport was second (Clymer is third).
Tip off is at noon Sunday. I'll be covering the game and will have a live blog going here, as I will tonight for the boys finals. Maple Grove plays for the Class D title at 5:30 p.m. followed by OTC Middle College in the C final at 7:15.
