Friday Night Live, lacrosse style: Timon routs N-W (with video)

I headed to South Buffalo Friday night to catch two of the area's top programs as Bishop Timon-St. Jude was scheduled to host Niagara-Wheatfield.

Then I headed back up to Buffalo's All High Stadium -- where the game had been moved -- after checking the Niagara-Wheatfield site on the iPhone. Note to self: Check the site before you leave. :-)

My purpose was to check out two good teams and get some research done for my preview stories, which will run in Tuesday's Scholastic Spotlight.

Timon looked very good -- building a 10-0 halftime on its way to a 17-9 victory -- while Wheatfield started slow, committing errors you don't expect to see from the Falcons. Wheatfield looked much better in the second half as it got its offense going.

The Tigers are loaded up front with Syracuse-bound senior Chris Kane and in the back with North Carolina-bound junior Brian Sullivan. Goalie Dave Scarcello, another junior, had big saves early and loves roaming out of the net -- he does it well, sparking several nice fast breaks.

It was also the debut of the iPhone video in the spring -- a chilly, misty night didn't make for great visibility. Also, with the players spread futher apart on the field, the lacrosse video seems a bit lacking compared to football. And certainly being inside for hoops made for good video. (Click the "video" tag at the right to see iPhone videos of seasons past).

Here goes -- the headlines say it all -- check out the last video as Kane (No. 2) sneaks behind a defenseman to get in position for a nice goal that would give Timon a 10-0 halftime lead. Sullivan is No. 12.
