Trench Trophy Golf Tournament remembers Gebhardt

The New England Motor Freight team of Ken Wegner, Gary Wegner, Bob Keicher and Brad Austin shot a 10-under par 62 on their way to winning the Lancaster Elks Charity Golf Tournament. Ninety-two golfers making up 23 foursomes competed in the 12th annual event July 10 at Kis-N-Greens Golf Course in Alden.

Proceeds were donated to the Trench Trophy John Gebhardt Memorial Scholarship fund and other charities supported by Elks' programs.

Among his many duties, Gebhardt served as a Trench Trophy Committee Scout. He died unexpectedly on Dec. 10, 2009. He was a 1964 graduate of Lancaster High School, who later played football at the University of Maryland. The loss was especially difficult for Trench Trophy Co-Chairman/Co-Founder Carl Kuras, who was a high school teammate of Gebhardt's.

Austin won the longest drive competition with a drive well over 300 yards. Michelle Brownshidle was the winner of the female longest drive. Bob Keicher won the closest to the pin for men while Cheryl Boyd was closest for the females.

The Trench Trophy award is presented annually to the top lineman among Western New York's  80-plus high school football teams. The winner is voted on by the Trench Trophy committee, WNY coaches and former players.
