Friday Night Live with PrepTalkTV returns, hoop-style from Hutch-Tech and Will North

PrepTalkTV is back.

It's the first Friday of the year, and it's a busy one as league action in boys basketball is getting into full swing.

Here's our intro video, setting tonight's table just as we did during football season.

There are several good games tonight, and with the tipoffs scheduled the way they are, video reporter Lauren Mariacher and I are going to try and visit as many as we can.

Check out our high school home page for today's lineup, which includes games in the Yale Cup, Monsignor Martin Association the ECIC and the Niagara Frontier League, among others.

Also definitley check out a beta version of the scoreboard -- on its own page. You can click on Thursday's game sumarries, some of which have details written up below the box score. That's part of our ongoing improvements to our Web site.

Riverside and Hutch-Tech go at it before a big crowd packed into Tech's beautiful (but small) gym.
5:40 p.m.
The 5:30 tipoff here at Riverside at Hutch-Tech was slightly delayed, but we are officially underway.

I will stay here as long as I can since it is a good matchup between a powerful Riverside team and an always tough Hutch-Tech squad which has had a great start from senior Maurice Miles. Coach Dave Rappl told me before the game that Miles has had a double-double in every game, along with about five steals and assists each game.

5:53 p.m. At the end of the first quarter at Tech, Riverside has a 10-6 lead. 10 from 11 on a Riverside's last basket was a great one, as Deon Artis finished off a great alley-oop pass from Willie Jefferson to finish an excellent transition for the Frontiers. Rebound, quick outlet to Jefferson, eye contact with Artis, lob pass to the hoop, two points. Nice.

6 p.m. Riverside now up, 18-6, with 4:50 left in the second quarter on two free throws by Artis that followed another fine transition basket in which Glibert Herrera finished off a break off a nice dish from Lamont Little.

6:11 p.m. We are at halftime and Riverside leads Hutch-Tech, 27-20. The Frontiers threatened to run away with it but the Engineers hung in there nicely by playing some tough ball.

My next stop is going to be Lackawanna at Tonawanda, a 6:30 p.m. scheduled tip. I'll catch some third quarter action here before heading to Tonawanda; then I'm headed to Clarence at Williamsville North.

Video reporter Lauren Mariacher is on her way to check out Archbishop Walsh at Bishop Timon-St. Jude (6:30 start) before catching some of Jamestown at Orchard Park before meeting up with me at North.

6:31 p.m. Hutch-Tech is hanging in there very well, scoring in fast breaks and earning fouls. Riverside leads, 33-26, with 3:07 left in the third.

6:40 p.m. I'm staying here for what should be a fun finish. We are tied 35-35 heading to the fourth.

6:50 p.m. Timeout Hutch-Tech with 4:38 left and Riverside up, 44-40.

7:10 p.m. SICK stuff here as Maurice Miles hits a three-pointer at the buzzer to send the game to OVERTIME. Whoa.

Here it is:

7:29 p.m. What a game. We have a FINAL SCORE: Riverside 61, Hutch-Tech 57 in overtime.

Great stuff here. More to come. I may not be able to get to Tonawanda before Clarence after this doozy.

8:32 p.m. Hello from Williamsville North, where the host Spartans have a 20-19 lead on Clarence at halftime. I caught the last three minutes or so of the first half of this one, which is close, as expected.

10:02 p.m. As you've probably seen on our scoreboard, we have a FINAL SCORE: Williamsville North 60, Clarence 55, in overtime.

Gotta love it. Two games, two overtimes. Freshman Sterling Taplin goes for 30 points, including four three-pointers over the fourth quarter and overtime. Whoa. My apologies on not getting an update up here sooner but it's been a busy night. More to come.

10:54 p.m. Not a bad tip-off for PrepTalkTV, which will be coming at you soon.

Fun games and big wins for Riverside and Williamsville North, two teams that I would think will certainly remain in my large school poll -- the polls return Tuesday with the Scholastic Spotlight.

In looking over the scores (hope you like the new scoreboard page featuring box scores for all games and writeups for many) ...

Definitely two big wins for Lackawanna in ECIC IV at Tonawanda and for Cheektowaga at home against Maryvale in ECIC III. Lancaster gets a solid win in a ECIC I race in which all the wins will be hard-fought -- although Jamestown's blowout at OP is certainly an exception to that rule.
