Live from AA Far West Regional baseball: V-Victor beats Clarence, 2-0

Live from Coca-Cola Field, it's the Class AA Far West Regional baseball playoff between Section-VI Clarence and Section V's Victor.

Clarence (17-3) earned its spot in this game by knocking off Orchard Park, 7-6, on Wednesday. Clarence's Sean Wolf hit a two-run single with two outs in the sixth inning to clinch it for the Red Devils.

The Victor Blue Devils have won 15-straight games, and have yet to lose to a New York State opponent. The Blue Devils (21-1) beat Fairport, 6-2, on Sunday to get to the Far West Regionals.

First pitch is set for 7 p.m., but might be a little delayed due to the Georgetown Cup game beforehand.

7:00 p.m.: Teams on the field for warm-ups, but the start time is going to be a little late. Clarence will have Zach Lauricella on the mound against junior Matt Portland of Victor.

7:06 p.m.: Clarence starters: Ryan Lawrence (RF), Brandon Bielecki (3B), Zach Lauriella (P), Sean Wolf (CF), Mike Elwood (SS), Pat Doherty (LF), Mark Armstrong (C), Nick Ferry (1B) and Zach Zabel (2B)

Victor starters: Cory McDonald (LF), Josh Ludwig (RF), Tommy Wagner (2B), Matt Portland (P), Jash Maves (SS), Pete Carrier (3B), Nolan Colucci (1B), Branden Rhodes (C) and Joe Simmons (CF)

7:23 p.m.  About ready to get things started. Clarence in the field first.

7:33 p.m.: Lauriella gets out of the top of the first inning without allowing a run. Victor stranded two in Wagner, who walked and was advanced to second on a Portland single. Blue Devils at the plate.

7:44 p.m.: Victor escapes runners on the corners when Maves snagged a grounder and gunned it to first from deep to end the inning. Portland allows one hit, strikes out one. Scoreless through one inning.

7:52 p.m.: With runners on first and second and no outs, Lauricella helps himself out by picking off Pete Carrier at second base, then forcing Rhodes into a ground out and striking out Simmons. Still scoreless.

7:56 p.m.: Portland doesn't throw a single ball in the bottom half of the second, striking out Red Devils on either side of a pop out to center field as the side is retired in order.

8:08 p.m.:  A Clarence double play gets the Red Devils out of some serious trouble in the top of the third, and Victor has stranded runners in all three innings.

8:21 p.m.: It's turning into something of a defensive battle here, still scoreless through three. A little discussion after a Clarence player slid wide into second and broke up a double play...after a lengthy chat with both coaches, the runner at first was also called out. It proved important, as Portland walked one and then struck out the next batter to get out of the inning intact. Four K's for Portland through three.

8:36 p.m.: One-two-three inning, as two Victor batters fly out and Lauricella gets his third strikeout. Still scoreless.

9:05 p.m.: Lots of talking going on in the top of the seventh. After a walk, the Clarence coach came out to challenge the bat being used by the Victor player. Finally, the runner at first was ruled out. Still no score, but plenty of action.

9:27 p.m.: Victor scores two in the top half of the seventh, and now Clarence has the tying run at the plate with two out.

9:30 p.m.: Portland strikes out the final batter, and Victor is the victor. The final score: 2-0.
